About this listen

Inside

A year ago Sophie Wickham stumbled into the isolated Lancashire village of Withered Hill, naked, alone and with no memory of who she is.

Surrounded by a thick ring of woodland, its inhabitants seem to be of another world, drenched in pagan, folklorish traditions.

As Sophie struggles to regain the memories of her life from before, she quickly realises she is a prisoner after multiple failed escape attempts. But is it the locals who keep her trapped, with smiles on their faces, or something else, lurking in the woods?

Outside

In London, Sophie leads a chaotic life, with too many drunken nights, inappropriate men and boring temp jobs. But things take a turn as she starts to be targeted by strange messages warning her that someone, or something, is coming for her.
With no idea who to trust, or where to turn for help, the messages become more insistent and more intimidating, urging Sophie to make her way to a place called Withered Hill…

An utterly bewitching, dual timeline folk horror story, with a truly devastating twist you have to hear to believe.

This was a really interesting and satisfying read. If you thought the people of Summers Isle were the real heroes of The Wicker Man (the original, not the asinine remake), you’ll enjoy this!

A very satisfying puzzle

A really great read. I would call it a Fairy Tale, not Horror, but very good. Ziggy Sobers is incredible, a real talent.

I am a huge fan of folk horror and thought this book did a really great job at hitting all the themes and tones of the genre. Not a flashy thriller but a slowly disquieting story that pulls you further and further into the world of Withered Hill. Fun story telling methods that keeps you on your heels.

I loved the voice of the narrator, who really brought this story to life. I could see this book so crazy in my mind.

Hope to find more like this.

Hit that folk horror nerve just right.

Ziggy Sobers is quite excellent as voice actor, if sometimes somewhat grating in the high register, but she is totally believable as each character. David Barnett has created a folk horror tale for our times and we better pay attention. Withered Hill is emotionally horrifying as opposed to blood, guts and gore, although there’s some gritty moments that are quite dark. Although I’m not generally a reader/listener (or watcher) of horror - Barnett’s writing and the concept behind the story is the draw for this reader/listener.

This was a very unusual and clever story, with shades of the Wicker Man. Narration was great as well, lovely accent. Recommended.

Great folk horror.
I felt it was a bit dirivotive, but I still enjoyed.
I felt it was a bit long.

Adored the writing, twist, folklore and fascinating premise. Absolutely recommend this book. Although I would say it was less horror and more folk-mystery, it was definitely creepy and so much fun.

Obsessed with this book, wish there was a sequel!
