An Instant New York Times Bestseller!

If I Stay meets Your Name in Dustin Thao's You've Reached Sam, a heartfelt audiobook about love and loss and what it means to say goodbye.

Seventeen-year-old Julie Clarke has her future all planned out—move out of her small town with her boyfriend Sam, attend college in the city; spend a summer in Japan. But then Sam dies. And everything changes.

Heartbroken, Julie skips his funeral, throws out his belongings, and tries everything to forget him. But a message Sam left behind in her yearbook forces memories to return. Desperate to hear him one more time, Julie calls Sam's cell phone just to listen to his voice mail recording. And Sam picks up the phone.

The connection is temporary. But hearing Sam's voice makes Julie fall for him all over again and with each call, it becomes harder to let him go.

What would you do if you had a second chance at goodbye?

Dear Listener,

What inspired me to write this story?
"The premise of You've Reached Sam has been with me for a long time. It's something so many of us have thought about at one point in our lives. What if you had a second chance to say goodbye to someone you've loved and lost? What would you say to them? What might they say back? It took me years before I sat down to think about these questions, and I definitely had someone in mind as I wrote it. The world is filled with lost moments. Sometimes we don't get the opportunity to say all the things we needed to. I know I didn't. It's one of the reasons I wrote this story. You've Reached Sam is for anyone who has ever experienced loss. It's a story about a girl named Julie who loses her boyfriend and calls him to hear his voicemail—but he picks up, temporarily reconnecting them. I hope you follow Julie's journey through this strange hole in the universe as she navigates the complexities of grief and moving forward. And I hope it gives a new perspective on love, life, and what it means to say goodbye." – Dustin Thao, writer of You've Reached Sam

Beautiful

What an incredibly moving debut novel by Dustin Thao. Highly recommend although I have to warn you that you will ugly cry!

To say that Soneela Nankani understood the assignment would be an understatement. She went above and beyond with the narration. What an incredible performer!

wow

This story resonates deeply with its raw intensity. Julie's proximity to the end of high school and the shattered dreams she shared with Sam evoke a profound sense of loss—not just of Sam, but of the future they envisioned together, including their college plans and shared aspirations of adulthood. While "You've Reached Sam" has its flaws, such as the lack of space given to Julie by the adults in her life and occasional lapses in emotional depth, the final chapter before the epilogue is exquisitely crafted, leaving me unable to see the screen through tears. Despite my anticipation, this book exceeded my expectations, delivering a powerful and unforgettable experience.

Please stop whispering the books

This is a neat concept but I was distracted by the constant whispering. I know the narrator is just following directions.

I didn't want to let Sam go either 😭

This is probably one of the most emotional books I've read. Seeing Sam through the eyes of Julie and how much they loved each other, I felt like I was a part of their journey as well. I wanted so badly for them to have their happily ever after. I've struggled with grief and loss too, and this book paints the struggle of letting go so well. Still feeling emotional as I write this review.

Awesome read. Have tissues handy.

This story is awesome, and the readers did awesomely. It was so well done, that I cried all the way through it. I will definitely listen to this again. But I will need to wait for my sinus to quit runny first.

Good book, but hard to listen.

If only I can get a chance to hear my love ones again, and have the chance to talk to them just one more time. This book hits the core of my heart. However, I wish this book was easier to listen to. The reader sounds a little too robotic and too out of character for me. It made it hard for me to relate to the characters. Overall, a good book, but hard to listen to.

Wow

So the story itself was good not great. But I did really like the book. The last two chapters are what made the story overall good and would actually recommend but I didn’t feel as attached to the main character as I would’ve liked. I’m actually going through a loss of my own and the ending was the only thing I really connected with when it came to my loss.
