About this listen

The generals said it was a rescue operation. Everyone knew it was a suicide mission. Zeb Carter volunteered.

Sori. Western military generals shudder when they hear the name. It is a remote, inaccessible village in Afghanistan, high up in the Hindu Kush mountains. It is where a dreaded Taliban terrorist hides and from where he conducts his murderous raids.

Villagers have a special name for the mountain on which Sori is perched. Mountain of Death. Sori is also where the Taliban hold three American soldiers captive. All attempts to free them have failed. Military operations and negotiations have proved fruitless. As the terrorists threaten to execute the soldiers, Zeb Carter volunteers to mount a rescue attempt. Alone.

On the Mountain of Death, the one person who might have the slightest chance is the man who doesn't fear dying.

Different Narrator Please!

It is hard to tell how good the story is because the narrator is awful. I won’t listen to any more of them because of this. I’m sorry to leave a bad review, but, it isn’t deserving of more.

not bad but....

I don't mean to sound cliche' but a story about the Taliban and not one single assalamualaikum, alu akbar or a infidel mentioned at all? not one! and no female handler to argue with? ( even though she has a crush on Zeb)? that in itself could of made this a longer book! I finished this book in one day where normally these tier 1 type stories take me 2-3 days while I'm on the road truck driving! I guess that's why this audiobook was only $7.99?

Relevant story

Story line was good. Agree with another reviewer that more interaction with a handler (not a 3 or 4 star, but female) would have been a good addition to alter the sound pitch of the story. Will continue with other Zeb stories.

A strong beginning for a thriller series!

Author Ty Patterson (different from Ty A. Patterson) has put out the first installment of a potentially thrilling series. Zeb Carter, a former US military operative, left the service and is a self-proclaimed mercenary, leaving the euphemistic descriptions of "private military contractor" or "security associate" in the dirt where they belong. Carter is a young man who has made peace with death but is dedicating his life to serve when and where he can. Being outside the chain of military command gives him plausible deniability, but it also gives him the ability to work just a tiny bit around direct orders. What are they going to do - court-martial him?

Nope!

The story is heavily plot-driven, but the plot is good, relatable, and fast-paced. I'm hoping the next few books in the series will pick up the lack of insight, internal dialogue, and character-based decision making.

The narrator is very good, his voice brisk, businesslike, and news-reporter neutral throughout most of the novel and more "intense" when Zeb finds himself in sticky situations.

Overall, 4/5!

Summation

Wonderful narrator-low, firm voice that really made the story richer. I like Jeb, and hope to read more of his exploits. He’s special. A Patriot.

Very irritating narrator.

Ok story but let down by narrator. The ding song voice of the foreign characters grates.

Possible potential...

I've never read/listened to anything by Ty Patterson before and thought I would give this a try after reading the rave reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. It felt to me like I was listening to a different book than the people who let all these wonderful reviews. I found this very predictable. The protagonist seemed to ho hum his way through all but one encounter and even that one was not too exciting.
Anyway, I think this could be a good series but it needs some work.
