Tamino and Papageno receive a magic flute and a glockenspiel from Pamina's mother, the Queen of the Night. The brave rescuers must overcome difficult tests, but the daring rescue plan succeeds. In the end, Tamino and Pamina, Papageno and his new girlfriend Papagena are happily in each other's arms.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a child prodigy who became an adult genius, died in debt and was buried in an unmarked grave in his adopted home of Vienna. Mozart needed no formal lessons in composition. He’d been composing since the age of five, and possessed astonishing musical memory, able to re-create whatever he heard or saw. He could mimic different styles and his travels, which were endless, gave him plenty to imitate whether sacred, dramatic or instrumental.

„Als ich ihn eines Tages besuchte, sagte er mir: „Eben hab ich ein kleines Duett für meine Oper beendigt, das Sie hören sollten.“ Er setzte sich ans Klavier und sang es. Ich war hingerissen, und die musikalische Welt wird mein Entzücken begreifen, wenn ich erwähne, dass es das Duett des Grafen Almaviva mit Susanna war, „So lang hab ich geschmachtet“. Etwas Köstlicheres wurde nie zuvor von einem Menschen geschrieben; oft ist es eine Quelle des Vergnügens für mich gewesen, dass ich der erste war, der es gehört.

Plötzlich ist er da, der graue Bote, wie aus dem Nichts. Er steht vor Mozart und erteilt ihm einen Auftrag: ein Requiem soll er schreiben, eine Totenmesse. Mozart akzeptiert.
