Le Repubbliche Marinare erano città portuali italiane che a partire dal Medioevo godettero, grazie alle proprie attività marittime, di autonomia politica e di prosperità economica. Esse furono favorite dalla loro posizione geografica, lontana dalle principali vie di passaggio degli eserciti e protetta da monti o lagune, e permise loro di dedicarsi indisturbate ai traffici marittimi. I loro governi erano espressione del ceto mercantile, che costituiva il nerbo della loro potenza. Le Crociate offrirono l'occasione di espandere i commerci: Amalfi, Genova, Venezia, Pisa, Ancona e Ragusa erano già impegnate nel commercio con il Levante, ma con le Crociate migliaia di abitanti delle città marinare si riversarono in Oriente, creando fondachi, colonie e stabilimenti commerciali.
