In A Contribution to the Psychology of Rumor, published in 1909, Carl Jung gives an example of how psychoanalysis explains the construction of rumor. He examines the dynamics of the psychology of rumor with reference to an incident in a girls’ school. In this essay, Carl Jung discusses an aspect of the work of the Swiss psychiatrist Paul Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939). Bleuler’s clinical analysis of "Negativism" in schizophrenia raised the concepts of "ambivalency" and "ambitendency", expressing the axiom that every tendency is balanced by its opposite. Jung argues that there is no such thing as a capricious playing with contrasts, and that the theory of negativism must adapt itself to the systematic character of resistance.

Although the theories presented in this book, a 1915 edition of the lectures Jung presented at Fordham University, are now thoroughly outdated, this book is still a fascinating glimpse of Jung's mind at a crucial time in his life.
