Travaillant pour un détective privé tokyoïte, Umiko Wada débarque en Angleterre pour enquêter sur le suicide d'un homme dans une chambre d'hôtel londonienne en 1977. Un mystérieux informateur s'est manifesté. Bien vite, son enquête s'oriente vers les ex-locataires du 18 Barnfield Hill.

Cornouailles, 1981. Chris Napier revient pour la première fois depuis des années à Tredower House, le domaine familial, acquis entre les deux guerres par son grand-oncle Joshua, pour assister au mariage de sa nièce. Au beau milieu de la cérémonie, Nick Lanyon, l'ami d'enfance de Chris, fait irruption et annonce, à la surprise de tous, que son père, Michael Lanyon, exécuté pour avoir commandité le meurtre de Joshua en 1947, était innocent.
