As chief advisor to the emperor Nero, Lucius Annaeus Seneca was most influential in ancient Rome as a power behind the throne. His lasting fame derives from his writings on Stoic ideology, in which philosophy is a practical form of self-improvement rather than a matter of argument or wordplay. Seneca's letters to a young friend advise action rather than reflection, addressing the issues that confront every generation: how to achieve a good life; how to avoid corruption and self-indulgence; and how to live without fear of death.

Of Anger by Seneca (4 BC-65 AD) defines and explains anger within the context of Stoic philosophy, and offers therapeutic advice on how to prevent and control anger. This is achievable by the development of an understanding of how to control the passions, and to make them subject to reason. Seneca believed that the passions arise in a rational mind as a misunderstanding of reality. A passion is a defective belief which occurs when the mind makes errors about the values of things.

Seneca uses the dialogue to address an issue that cropped up many times in his life: the desire for a life of contemplation and the need for active political engagement. Seneca argues that the goal of a tranquil mind can be achieved by being flexible and seeking a middle way between the two extremes.

E proprio all'amico, oltre che parente, Seneca dà il consiglio di ritirarsi a vita privata, tralasciando ogni attività pubblica. Assumendo cioè un atteggiamento filosofico apparentemente epicureo, nonostante lo stesso Seneca fosse un esponente importante dello stoicismo romano.

In On the Firmness of the Wise Man Seneca argues that Stoicism is not as harsh as it first appears. Recalling the figure of Cato the Younger, Seneca argues that Cato as a wise person suffered neither injury nor insult. Although Serenus objects to this paradox, Seneca provides further analogies to emphasize the impervious nature of the wise person. In chapter 5 Seneca distinguishes between contumelia (insults) and iniuria (injuries).

On Clemency is a two volume (incomplete) hortatory essay written in 55-56 CE by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Stoic philosopher, to the emperor Nero in the first five years of his reign. From Seneca's remarks, it would appear that it was written after Nero had turned 18, which would place it after the murder of his rival Britannicus in 55 AD. It may therefore have been written partly as an apology, perhaps as a means of assuring the Roman nobility that the murder would be the end, not the beginning of bloodshed.
