Set in 12th-century England, with colourful descriptions of medieval life and adventures, "Ivanhoe" is a realistic and vibrant story set in a kingdom torn asunder by the hatred between Saxons and Normans. Richard the Lionheart is headed home from the Third Crusade to reclaim his throne. Amid the heat of a tournament, King Richard comes to the aid of another crusader who has returned in disguise. Wilfred of Ivanhoe also seeks to recover a lost heritage - and the hand of Lady Rowena, "a rose of loveliness, and a jewel of wealth; the fairest among a thousand."

Julius Caesar is quite an enigmatic figure to contemplate. He is often viewed as an upholder of liberty, the hero of the Roman Republic, but in truth he died a dictator. In another strange turn of events his assassins were those that he had granted full pardons to in his famous acts of clemency. Caesar was a man who was often found to be a polarizing figure. He was loved by the general public but hated by his peers in the Senate.

This tale, published in 1828, is based on The Story of an Apparition, a ghost story published in Blackwood's 10 years earlier by an author identified only as A. B. Sir Walter Scott took that rather flimsy story and turned into a masterful tale of the supernatural.
