Originally introduced in 1902 in another Barrie novel, The Little White Bird, Peter's story was expanded as a stand-alone novel in 1911 and since then has been memorably adapted for the movies, for television and for the stage. Peter Pan is a special little boy, dressed in withered leaves, who does not want to grow up. He lives with the fairies far, far away, on the magical island of Neverland. One night, Peter Pan flies into the room of Wendy and her brothers, Michael and John. He sprinkles them with magic pollen and shows them how to ride the wind and fly. The excited children follow him to Neverland, where incredible adventures await them.

James Matthew Barrie (1860 – 1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. Barrie’s short story The Inconsiderate Waiter is a humorous take on the British class system of 1898. At the Victorian Club, it is improper for an upper-class gentleman to be seen to take an interest in any concerns of a member of the working class. So when William, the narrator's waiter, begins to display signs of having a personality and feelings, the respectable gentleman experienced much discomfort.

The character of Peter Pan first appeared in The Little White Bird in 1902. This most famous and enduring of his works, Peter Pan; or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, had its first stage performance on December 27, 1904. Peter Pan would overshadow all his other works, but his short stories cannot be overlooked. Indeed, from today’s vantage point, they are excellent gems of social manners, of class, and of the way characters, sometimes in the most mundane of circumstances, react in the most surprising of ways.

In the world of the Victorian Club, it does not do for a gentleman to be seen to take an interest in any member of the working classes. How dreadfully inconvenient then, when the narrator's waiter, begins to display alarming tendencies towards having a personality, a home life, emotions and fears of his own. The last thing any respectable gentleman should do is permit himself to be drawn into this other dubious world...let alone entertain emotions such as interest or pity for the underclass.

Theatre Royal. The very name summons up something of grandeur and eloquence. And it was. Hosted by Ralph Richardson, these big-name productions also included the creme de la creme of acting talents from John Gielgud, Robert Morley and Orson Welles to Trevor Howard, Michael Redgrave and Laurence Olivier. They were based on works by the world's leading authors, among them Charles Dickens, Henry James, Oscar Wilde and Anton Chekhov.
