Henry René Albert Guy de Maupassant nació en Dieppe, Francia, el 5 de agosto de 1850. Maupassant fue admirador y amigo de Gustave Flaubert al que conoció en 1867. Flaubert lo tomó bajo su protección, le abrió la puerta de algunos periódicos y le presentó a Iván Turgénev y Émile Zola.
