I maj 1942 cirklar amerikanska och japanska piloter över Korallhavet öster om Australien. Båda sidor försöker desperat lokalisera fiendens hangarfartyg. Till en början har amerikanerna turen på sin sida, men senare slår japanerna tillbaka. Det är första gången i historien som ett sjöslag utkämpas utan att de inblandade fartygen har kontakt med varandra.
