Während sich die Eltern um ihre Tochter sorgen, was sie denn nachts heimlich mache, erzählt der Pate Obergerichtsrat Droßelmeier Marie ein Märchen, das auf das Schicksal ihres Nussknackers übertragbar ist. Voller Entschlossenheit, den Nussknacker vor dem Mausekönig zu retten, geht Marie bis an ihre kindlichen Grenzen...

Der Student Nathanael berichtet von einer unheimlichen Begegnung: In dem Wetterglashändler Coppola glaubt er den Advokaten Coppelius, die Schreckensgestalt seiner Kindheit, wiedererkannt zu haben. Dieser hatte seinen Vater regelmäßig besucht und zu alchemistischen Experimenten verführt. Bis heute macht Nathanael ihn für den Tod des Vaters verantwortlich. Von seinem Kindheitstrauma eingeholt fällt es Nathanael zusehends schwerer, zwischen Wahn und Wirklichkeit zu unterscheiden und so bleibt ihm am Ende nur die Flucht in den Freitod.
