The demand for the healing message in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is growing worldwide. People are asking for a more spiritual understanding of health, for a better basis for lasting relationships, and for the confidence that comes from finding a greater purpose to existence. Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, wrote this memoir in 1891. The first part of the book outlines her family’s history and her own youth and early adulthood in New England. She then explores her discovery of Christian Science and essential ideas of a scientific Christianity that brings healing. While giving insight into the life of this religious leader, the spiritual counsel in this book nurtures and guides listeners today.

This two-part book was compiled and edited by Mary Baker Eddy, the church’s founder. Part I (“The First Church of Christ, Scientist”) describes the building of The Mother Church Extension in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1906. Writings by Mary Baker Eddy and newspaper articles from across North America detail this significant architectural achievement and the rapid growth of Christian Science as a movement.

Between 1883-1896, Mary Baker Eddy wrote many articles, letters, and poems to support and encourage the growing membership of the Christian Science church she founded. Many were first published in The Christian Science Journal. Mary Baker Eddy published them as this separate book, Miscellaneous Writings. She suspended all Christian Science teaching for one year, urging the study of this book in its place.

Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures is the central text of the Christian Science religion. It was written by Mary Baker Eddy, inspired by studies of the Bible she undertook in 1867 following a healing experience. Science and Health posits a wholly metaphysical view of Christianity in which sin, disease, and death are not of God, and are therefore not real. Further, it suggests that by striving toward a spiritual understanding of the world as God's perfect creation, these "false beliefs" are shed from one's experience.

The author, Mary Baker Eddy, considered this book her second most important work after Science and Health. In it, she addresses basic differences in theology between Christian Science and traditional Christianity. She explains that God, good, is always present and is all-powerful. From this basis, she shows listeners how to address topics such as evil, sin, and materialism.

Through a question-and-answer format, Mary Baker Eddy explains the basic ideas of Christian Science. The first question is, “How would you define Christian Science?” She answers: “As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony.” Subsequent questions include “Is man material or spiritual?” and “How should I undertake to demonstrate Christian Science in healing the sick?”

The book challenges the notion that participation alone is enough, urging listeners to shift their mindset from settling for average to striving for the pinnacle in every aspect of life. A collection of 11 of Mary Baker Eddy’s books and sermons, these writings answer questions about Christian Science and explain its teachings. It also includes her memoir, Retrospection and Introspection.

So, why a reprint of a book over 135 years old when there are so many reprints and new editions of the text? Excellent question and one I will endeavor to answer here. Since it is our goal to find and reprint spiritual classics on the verge of falling into the vast abyss, we came upon reference to this work while reading Lifting the Veil by Lillian Dewaters and The Sickle by William W. Walter.

Following the publication of her main book in 1875, Mary Baker Eddy was giving regular lectures in Massachusetts, at Hawthorne Hall, near the Boston Commons and named for Nathaniel Hawthorne. Between the late 1870s and the mid 1880s, with a seating capacity of 250, Eddy regularly filled the hall on Sunday afternoons, with parishioners eager to hear her lectures, which were pivotal in helping to quickly build the Christian Science movement. Christian Healing is a lecture she gave in April of 1880.
