Mark King was an elderly Amish man who lived alone. Partly out of choice, and partly because his seven (now adult) children could no longer cope with his ways. He did care about things and people, but felt unable to show it. Each year when Christmas comes around he feels himself becoming more stern and angry and resentful. He does not celebrate Christmas at all other than to attend prayer meetings etc., and distances himself from the community for weeks at a time. Could the sad, and bitter old man find happiness once again or will he be lonely for the rest of his life?

A young British prince John visits rural Pennsylvania as part of a royal visit with his family over the Christmas period. They visit an Amish community as a spontaneous part of their tour so the party were not surrounded by press and security. Prince John was getting bored, and was kicking a stone in the dust on the edge of a tour of the community, when he notices a young Amish boy of a similar age named Abe.

The elders had been predicting a cold snap for many weeks now, but nobody could have expected what was to happen next. In the town, the Englischers had their machines to clear roads, but the community just had shovels and each other. After prayers, the community left the prayer house to make their way home just as the snow began to fall. They all looked skyward, for the sky was a dull grey, laden with snow, and the flakes of snow seemed so large that the children ran around trying to catch them.

Eli lost his wife after just four years of blissful marriage and just two years after being blessed with a daughter, Sarah. He struggled to cope with the land and raising his daughter. Even with the help from friends in the community, he knew that he had to get work outside the community to survive, if only in the short term. He had to sell the family buggy to make ends meet and so had to walk the eight miles to the nearest town to ask for work.

The forest on the edge of the community was not often entered into by the community folk due to children telling stories of things going on that were not normal or safe. Over years these stories had become village folklore and even some of the adults had started to believe in them. Miriam had long held desires over a young man in the village called Aaron who lived by himself after the recent passing of both parents. Miriam was trying to care for her elderly mother as well as make knitted goods to sell in the town for income. She was struggling to hold things together.

All Rebecca wanted was to be happy, and she was for a while. She had married the love of her life, Jacob, but when they discovered they couldn’t have Kinner of their own, things started to fall apart. Becoming more withdrawn from her Mann, she couldn’t help but blame Gott for their predicament. Why did Gott take away such a blessing from them? Jacob wanted his Fraa back.
