About this listen

Secrets can kill.

Harper wanted Sean to dominate her, to degrade her...and she loved every second of it. Every hot, gasping-for-breath, clenching-the-sheets moment. She loved to have him looming over her, dictating her every move. She got off on it.

But now it's too real. Their relationship has gotten complicated and dark, fast.

For Sean, Harper is more than just a good f--k. She's quickly becoming an obsession. When she pulls him from the fire yet again, he can't pretend that she's not the center of his world.

But Harper's got secrets too, and hers are twice as deadly. When she finally starts to unravel, they will both have to find a way to save themselves - and each other - if they want to stay together.

Contains mature themes.

hidden gem.

I have spent so money on books that were not nearly as good as this series. Two complex characters with real life struggles. the storyline was great. The spice was HOT, HOT, HOT.
I loved everything about it!

Can anyone say "continuity"????

Granted, I am only 9-10 chapters in this second book of this series, but really...... why did his name change from Sean Patrick Cavanagh in the first book to Sean Harris in the second book? Also, his lawyer went from Bill in the first book to some female attorney he refers to as "T". These may seem like little changes, but if you are a detailed oriented person, this kind of stuff makes me absolutely nuts. Let's see how the rest of the book goes from here.

Addictions Explored

Let me start by saying Addiction and Obsession by Vivian Wood REALLY NEEDS to come with a content warning. When I checked, I did not find any CWs or TWs in the beginning of the audiobooks, physical books, or even on the author's website. There are some very sensitive topics <spoiler>(eating disorders, alcohol addiction, miscarriage, and car accident / medical trauma)</spoiler> discussed in explicit detail. Given the depth and length that the sensitive topics are discussed, it is irresponsible to forego the CW.

This duet delves into two types of addictions while exploring the budding relationship between Sean, a tattoo artist, and Harper, a model. In Addiction, the story begins when Harper walks into Sean's tattoo parlor and he is filled with insta-lust. What comes next is more so a study in the two MCs addictions -- their inner dialogue and cognitive dissonance, convoluted feelings, physical sensations and experiences, as well as descriptive details -- than it is a spicy romance. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some spicy dark-ish scenes, including domination, restraints and pain for pleasure. However, there are also long stretches where the plot's sole focus is the MCs relationships with their addictions, not each other.

I went into this book relatively clueless, so I was conflicted as I began navigating the tough topics. As a person in the recovery community, the MCs inner dialogue, faulty reasoning, and selfish thoughts while under the influence resonated with me. Much of their struggles mirrored my struggles of deciding to get clean and then the challenges during early recovery. If nothing else, this novel nails what it is like to live under the oppressive feelings of addiction (until the end of the second novel when it gets a little too HEA too quickly. But it is a fictional novel, so I'll give the author leeway to deviate from real life and wrap up the story with a cute little bow / HEA.)

If you are in early recovery for <spoiler>alcoholism, drug use, or eating disorders</spoiler>, I highly recommend taking a step back from this story and evaluating where you are with your mental health and recovery. Parts of the story could absolutely be triggering and / or cause cravings.

Do I recommend this novel as a spicy romance novel? No. It doesn't hit enough on the couple's relationship enough for me. Do I recommend this novel as a study of addictive thoughts and actions? Absolutely.

Finished because I spent money on it

Seriously only finished because I spent my own money on it. There are many triggers in this world and they should have at least added on to this book description of the miscarriage. That took away from the enjoyment of the book and the escape books provide for me.

confusing

the narrorators were good. the story I was confused there were a couple of things like the name change, the lawyer name change and she said in the beginning she was allergic to bananas then she was eating them towards the middle. it did shed light on earing disorders in the modeling industry so that was good.
