About this listen

Jason, like many people, is an addict. His addiction doesn't center on any drug or alcohol. He's a pornography and masturbation addict, and the insidious nature of his addiction erodes his self-worth, his relationships, and his career.

Jason meets David at a 12-step meeting, where David offers him a new approach to treating pornography addiction. Through a series of meetings, David guides Jason as he successfully overcomes his addiction, a process supported by glimpses into Jason's family and how his relationships improve as pornography loses its hold on his life.

Jason's story is fictional. The treatment plan he follows is very real. Designed by author and pornography addiction treatment expert Brian Brandenburg, the strategies found in Power over Pornography are praised by those who, having taken part in Brandenburg's program, now pursue lives free of pornographic viewing.

Brandenburg's innovative treatment plan comes at a crucial moment in the fight against pornography and masturbation addiction. A generation of Internet-savvy children has grown up with access to pornography, quite literally, at their keyboard-typing fingertips. The images and videos they view online are far more graphic than their parents can imagine.

Now, the children of this generation have become young adults, with many addicted to the instant gratification of pornography. Like Jason, most pornography and masturbation addicts are male, but women are also afflicted. Maintaining normal, healthy relationships becomes almost impossible while in the grip of pornography. Anxiety and guilt over your actions worsen into clinical depression and self-loathing. Work productivity suffers, and an addict with on-the-job access to the Internet is always a few mouse clicks away from job termination and scandal.

Jason and others in his situation are discovering traditional 12-step programs don't address key aspects of pornography and masturbation addiction.

No more Viewing and Doing!!

Great book. I love how this one is a story of one man's experience meeting someone who walks him through a program. I love and frequently read/listen to Gary Wilson's Your brain on porn for the statistics and testimony of people of all different ages, but this wholesome journey keeps getting more inspiring with every read. I like how Brian did the voice of his mentor David while Brian's son did the voice of his father as he was going through all of this.

already listened to it 3 times.

Good concepts, mechanical delivery

Would you consider the audio edition of Power Over Pornography to be better than the print version?

I imagine they are comparable, though having the homework in writing would be beneficial.

If you’ve listened to books by Brian Brandenburg before, how does this one compare?

n/a

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Brian Brandenburg?

Someone with a little more experience voice-acting. Admittedly, the writing itself was also a little stiff - not bad, just not very natural.

What did you learn from Power Over Pornography that you would use in your daily life?

Honestly everything I learned was very enlightening and useful. I'm very excited to apply the steps and rid myself of my bad habits.

Any additional comments?

My only main critique is, as I've said, that the dialogue is stiff. I can believe that David is a proper, polite man - his dialogue fits his character. Jason, however, seemed much more to be a relatable, down-to-earth character. His dialogue does not reflect that. His sentences are too well thought-out. Its possibly too well written.

What sounds right & logical beating porn isn’t always true

He shifts your perspective.

Unique narrative style that keeps you engaged. Very practical.

Hard to read as an audiobook with some complex themes, requiring times to pause & reflect, take notes, etc.

Great book, average audiobook

This book has great concepts and they have helped me to stay away from viewing and doing (looking at pornography). Its different than the 12 step program in interesting ways. But the audiobook was awkward to listen to, because the author reads the book with his son and they both sound like robots. Buy the book instead and use it like a textbook.

Content Great, production value not so much

If you can get past the low production value of the recording it does have some really solid advice. It sounds like something two guys recorded in their living room. Nevertheless, if you are struggling with P the framework he provides is top notch and I feel a lot would benefit. After listening for about 30min or so you start to forget about the poor quality, looking past it is tough in the beginning though lol

It might be for you...

I wanted to finish but the narration really brings it down. They stutter a lot and the pace of it is just too disjointed for my tastes. Good content though.
