Doctor Fionn Kane is running from a broken heart, one he hopes to mend in small-town Nebraska, far away from his almost-fiance and his derailed surgical career. It's a simpler life: head down, hard work, and absolutely no romantic relationships. He wants none of the circus he left behind in Boston. But then the real circus finds him.

Fun read even if it was a bit repetitive
Reviewed: 02-20-25
This is a good read, though the plot, format, and characters are pretty repetitive of the first two books. I enjoy the female lead having some autonomy and the story fits well with the rest of the series. For a serial killer series, it’s all pretty schmaltzy and Disney-esk but still a fun read. Narrators are good.

Loren Calla has only ever been ordinary. As a human struggling to survive in a city that caters to the needs of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures, she always assumed her life would remain simple, predictable, and as safe as her world would allow. Until she barely escapes abduction at the hands of Darkslayers—supernatural bounty hunters that possess the Sight, a magical tracking ability that allows them to see a person's aura—and one of her friends is taken in her place. The abductors are demanding a ransom: Loren's life in exchange for her friend's safe return.

Poorly written on so many levels. Dull story. Formulaic plot and characters. Weak fmc. Boringly stereotypical gender roles. Male narrator sounds like a bad commercial voiceover. Waste of time.

Overall, a very good listen. Some of the plot is a bit formulaic and there is no build to the big twist but an enjoyable read. I will definitely check out the next book.

For a story with so much murder it’s surprisingly boring
Reviewed: 11-22-24
Meh. The book isn’t terrible but I don’t plan to continue the series. There’s so little plot outside the lovers story, and even that is fairly weakly explored, just very surface-level and repetitive. It felt like any story points were just loose events peppered in and they were never tied together or explained. Possibly it improves as the series continues?

Beyond dull
Reviewed: 11-18-24
There’s barely any story to follow within or across books and virtually no character development, outside of the male characters coming to terms with their sexualising of the female lead, which is not character development. I bailed in book three but definitely wouldn’t have continued past book one if the books didn’t come as a set.
Also, the “spicy” bits are so cringy - the “spicy” dialog is so off putting that I skipped past those parts. I’m also fully at a loss as to why a spicy book would follow a primarily child abuse and assault storyline. Wildly tone deaf, even if the character dialog wasn’t uncomfortably cringe.

Fizzles out
Reviewed: 10-28-24
A decent quick read but the story really fizzles out towards the end. The conclusion is a bit of a let down, mainly because the reveal feels rushed and sort of just jammed in, but also because it is rather a dull ‘twist’ with a mundane resolution. The story also felt a bit clunky due to random side character points that are introduced but never really explored.
I’m not bummed that I read it but I also wouldn’t recommend the book to a friend.

I was starting to think I knew what I was dealing with at the university, best known as Villain Academy. I’d come to believe that by owning my role as the last remaining Bloodstone, I could change this place for the better. Then, a series of shocking revelations turns everything I believed on its head. The other scions have my back now, with all the trouble that's brought them. How much more will they have to sacrifice before we can find some kind of peace?

Story really fizzles towards the end

The story is fine overall but does become pretty mundane in the last 2 books. The series ending, both with the magical component and the romance subplot, was particularly dull and weakly built.

Story
The one thing you never talk about while you're in the Scholomance is what you'll do when you get out - not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But that impossible dream has somehow come true for El and her classmates. And what's more, she didn't even have to become the monstrous dark witch she's prophesised to become to make it happen. Instead of killing enclavers, she saved them, and now the world is safe for all wizards. Peace and harmony have enveloped all the enclaves of the world. Just kidding.

There’s not actually a story
Reviewed: 04-29-24
The ending is very dull and gives no resolution to the story, which makes sense as there’s not really much plot to the series. There are periodic events that carry the characters through the various books and the author hints at setting up a proper series-scale plot but nothing really comes of it. That said, it is an easy read and enjoyable enough, sort of like watching a sitcom that’s into its later seasons - there’s nothing driving the season’s story but that doesn’t mean the episodes aren’t enjoyable.

Story
I was never meant to live an ordinary life, and when I’m dropped from the sky into a haunting forest, facing the barrel of an unknown man’s gun, I believe it to be true. Ruler of Blackwater, Caz Harlow, is the man behind the gun. He’s broody, calculating, commanding and, surprisingly, I can hear every thought that runs through his mind. Because I can, he wants me out of his world and sent back to where I came from, so he makes it his mission to find a way.

Interesting concept, super boring book
Reviewed: 03-05-24
I had high hopes for this book - other reviews are glowing and the premise sounded interesting. Unfortunately, the book is incredibly boring. It’s slow to delve into any plot of note and the characters are all fairly one-dimensional and there is no character development supporting character relationships or actions. The female lead is particularly disappointing - I kept hoping she would develop/reveal some trait, skill, or backstory of interest but to no avail. Her dialogue ranges from whiny to immature to just cringy.
There is also nothing creative or interesting about the world building. It’s a basic, semi-modern gangster-style universe that might as well be Earth except for a few changes to location names. Honestly, kind of a weak peaky blinders rip off.
The spicy scenes weren’t fun spicy, they were porny. I audibly said “ew” in more than one scene.
Narrators are both good though.
