Story
Freddy Stern, a twenty-one-year-old cashier, has lived a plain, albeit harsh life. Having been orphaned—twice—he's spent the last ten years working and staying out of trouble. His only aspiration is to save enough money to become an archhuman. His dream gets the jump on him when he barely survives a near-death encounter and finds himself in possession of 1% Lifesteal, a bizarre talent with numerous contradictions and just as many uses.

Absolutely loved the book…but

Author did a fantastic job addressing some series mental and social health issues. One conversation between the MC and someone else in a kitchen had me in tears. Fantastic story overall, interesting interface and world. I believe this could be a fantastic series and do wonderfully. But….
Possible Spoilers*******************
My only problem is if the tone doesn’t shift a bit I’ll drop the series. MCs losing constantly can establish some development. But at some point I’m just reading about some guy who literally doesn’t catch a break and loses constantly even when winning. And that isn’t fun over multiple books.

This book was absolutely amazing to me. There were times I literally said “I swear if he messes this choice up” and the MC delivered making logical choices. Well at least as far as skill development, the MC overall makes wonderfully terrible decisions which make the story amazing.
Characters are well written, system is great, narrator found their stride, and the humor was amazing.
Think DCC with a little less grimness, or HWFWM but the MC is way more likable.

Story
The prestigious Legionnaire Academy of Du Gok Bhong—an institution centuries old and one I never thought I'd qualify for, much less attend. Yet here I am, a Gold Bracket contender and 8th Tier Core Realm Cultivator, starship-bound to compete with the thousands of other tributes from the occupied colony worlds across the stars. For most, it's a death sentence. For me, it's my one chance to gain the imperial status I need to liberate the Earth and marry the girl I love.

My only complaint about the series at this point is that it’s almost gotten away from being Max’s story. I understand some step backs and info gathering on the side characters. But I’ll be damned if Max didn’t seem like a side character in this book. I felt like every time Max was making progress it switches views. Again just my opinion.

I continue to enjoy the focus on Zac and what is going on around him. This is one of the longer series that hasn’t gone to 417 point of views and the MC gets half a chapter, which I enjoy.

I kept holding off on giving this series a shot. The intro reminded me of another story quite a bit and I hated that story. It had some ups and downs at the start for me but the longer I listened the more I loved it.
MC makes some decisions that will make you scratch your head. But the more you learn about the guy and the story progresses they all start to make sense.
World building is good and enjoyable, not great but damn close. System seems interesting and I enjoy some of the variances. Overall, this is a wonderful series with some humor and some solid feelings moments.
Don’t be like me and wait and wait, give this book a shot.

Xavier Collins was sitting in class when the System integrated Earth into the Greater Universe, where countless vast kingdoms, empires, and collectives battle for domination. He didn't know what choosing to be a Champion would entail. He just liked the sound of it. But when he's teleported to the aptly-named Tower of Champions, he must face challenges against those who have known about the System since birth.
