Interesting Storyline But Wayyy Too Drawn Out
Reviewed: 12-11-24
The story is interesting enough. The author just takes forever to get to the conclusion, and not in a good way. I initially loved that the book has over 14 hours of listening time, but by two-thirds of the way through I had to bump up the listening speed just to get through it.
The characters are okay. I never felt super connected to any of them, except the child.
Just my opinion, but if a book is going to be this long, it should be absolutely full of clever plot twists or genuine developments that one can’t see coming from two miles away.
Overall, it was an okay book - very little bad language and no graphic sex scenes. It simply should have been half as long.

Story
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

A very different kind of novel… a true escape
Reviewed: 09-24-24
The idea of the story is so different from anything I’ve ever read. It develops slowly but logically. However, in the context of the story’s overall setting, logic is totally subjective.
The plot is very engaging, in that the reader has to steadily take in the boundaries and realities described while at the same time attempting to discern the “real” meaning of it all.
The narration could not be better. I’ve listened to hundreds of Audible books, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is easily among the top five. He brings the characters vividly to life.
If you’re looking for a truly unique listen, Piranesi is it!

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Everything about this book is dull. Monotone Irish accent. All of the characters’ voices sounding too similar to be independently interesting. Depressing content. Unlikeable, rather lame main character. Content became more graphic and language deteriorated. Stopped listening after a few chapters - and I almost NEVER call it quits before the end. Just wasn’t worth it.

Another Awesome Novel from Jane Harper

I really enjoyed this book! Like all of Harper’s books, it is face-paced, smart, with unexpected twists. She has a gift for writing smooth, natural dialogue that thoughtfully paints each character so that I actually care about what happens to them. The way she threads past events and memories into the main story line keeps the flow of the book interesting and fresh. The twists and turns are believable. And the mystery lasts until the very end. I highly recommend The Survivors!
** Also, if it were a movie, you could watch it with your pre-teen. No inappropriate sexuality and very mild language.

Story
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

Tortuously Long Story Filled with Unlikeable People
Reviewed: 09-17-20
I liked the idea of this book - a group of old friends get snowed in at a remote estate and then a mysterious murder occurs. I was hoping for a cross between The Shining and And Then There Were None, as one write-up promised. But aside from their titles all containing consonants and vowels, there were very few other similarities.
The story just droned on and on, covering and recovering bland details of the characters’ tenuous relationships. College friends get together after a long absence. It sounds nice, until you realize that they all bring out the very worst in each other - falling back on old, destructive partying habits and exhibiting personality traits that a normal person should have outgrown by her mid-twenties.
These are professional people in their thirties. And yet they act as if they are in junior high, succumbing to the most juvenile of peer pressures. Are real people really that malleable? I found myself yelling, “Well, if you don’t like how she’s treating you, go back to your own cabin! You’re 33!”
Overall, it was simply hours upon hours spent listening to people that I grew to intensely dislike. By the end, I didn’t care what happened to any of them - except for two characters.
Two characters were compelling and complex. I did care what happened in their future. But that was a disappointment, as well. After untold pages of blah, the author only spared a few sentences on the destiny of the only two characters that kept me listening until the very end.
Disappointing.

Interesting plot line. Unforeseen twists. But long stretches of tedious inner dialogue. WAY too much of the main character asking herself, “Should I proceed with Option 1, 2, or 3?” I felt like that was all filler. The author should choose a course of action for his characters and just go with it. I don’t want to hear hours of his inner musings.

Tired Anti-Christian Propaganda
Reviewed: 05-26-19
Crimson Lake is yet another book that starts strong - vibrant characters, intriguing story, complex plot, perfect narration. And it continues on for hours, pulling me in, building my eagerness to know the resolution. Then BAM, suddenly I find myself listening to the hero and heroine crudely interrupting an Aboriginal church service, chatting casually with side characters about which “effing” apostles and Scriptures they hate more (spoiler alert: they are Matthew and I & II Corinthians), and generally characterizing anyone who believes in God or *gasp* practicing a religion as a simple fool.
I’m not sure why it is that in this age of “inclusivity” and “equality” it is still perfectly okay to belittle and demean Christians... and paying customers, no less!
I’m sorry, but I’m not that desperate for entertainment.
