“Once again Harper proves that she is peerless in creating an avalanche of suspense with intimate, character-driven set pieces...Harper’s legions of fans will exult in reading Exiles.”—David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author
"Harper’s fine prose and narrator Stephen Shanahan’s expert delivery combine for a transcendent Australian noir experience."—AudioFile on The Dry (Earphones Award Winner)
Federal Investigator Aaron Falk is on his way to a small town deep in Southern Australian wine country for the christening of an old friend's baby. But mystery follows him, even on vacation.
This weekend marks the one-year anniversary of Kim Gillespie's disappearance. One year ago, at a busy town festival on a warm spring night, Kim safely tucked her sleeping baby into her stroller, then vanished into the crowd. No one has seen her since. When Kim's older daughter makes a plea for anyone with information about her missing mom to come forward, Falk and his old buddy Raco can't leave the case alone.
As Falk soaks up life in the lush valley, he is welcomed into the tight-knit circle of Kim’s friends and loved ones. But the group may be more fractured than it seems. Between Falk’s closest friend, the missing mother, and a woman he’s drawn to, dark questions linger as long-ago truths begin to emerge. What would make a mother abandon her child? What happened to Kim Gillespie?

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Their methods are... unusual. But when a graveyard full of large steel toolboxes filled with body parts is found at the bottom of Sydney harbor, unusual is the least of their worries. For Eden and Eric, the case holds chilling links to a scarred childhood - and the murderer who raised them. For Frank, each clue brings him closer to something he’s not sure he wants to face.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Critic reviews
“Once again Harper proves that she is peerless in creating an avalanche of suspense with intimate, character-driven set pieces that are as exquisitely engineered as the inner workings of a Steinway. Harper’s legions of fans will exult in reading Exiles.”—David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author
“Another all-consuming mystery from Harper...Fans will relish Falk’s intuitive “spider sense” moments here, and they will be amazed at the simultaneously shocking and tender ending.”—Booklist, starred review
“With this book, Harper may well have given her legions of readers exactly what they have been waiting for: a beautifully observed crime novel about regional life featuring the reticent and endearing federal policeman, Aaron Falk...Quietly and inevitably, the secrets and deceptions are unraveled as Falk finds himself deftly woven into the weft of this small community. In Exiles, Falk may at last have come home.”—Sydney Morning Herald

An estuary town north of Aberdeen, Stonemouth, with its five mile beach, can be beautiful on a sunny day. They dismiss it as junk mail, a fluke—until very, very bad things begin happening to people on the list. First, a well-liked old man is drowned on a beach in the small town of Kennewick, Maine. Can’t wait for the next book in the series! For me the “mystery” is tangential to the characters, setting, and relationships. Still the resolution was classic Kane Harper!

Love Jane Harper!
I bought this book on the first day it was available and it did not disappoint. The characters are believable and well drawn and the action is well plotted. The narrator is great. I was sad to get to the end . . . actually put off listening to the last bit to make it last longer.

I enjoyed this series immensely! I really didn’t think I would.
I love Aaron Falk’s character and storyline. The entire three books series was a great, engaging listen for me. I also love Steve Shanahan’s voice.

Keep Going
For the first 2/3 the mystery was developed completely by conversations among friends and family of the missing woman. The last 1/4 backs up and tells the story of the missing woman on the critical day. The problem is that you become impatient with the book. But the last section makes up for your indulgence and provides what is necessary to see the book as a whole. I liked it after thinking it would fizzle. It didn't.

Absolutely up to my expectations. Harper writes of characters and places that grow increasingly layered and complex. She reveals keen insight into modern lives and age-old developmental and moral conflicts. The mysteries are captivating.

Long slow burn…
This is my third Jane Harper book and probably my least favorite. While I loved the descriptions of the setting to the point that it made me want to visit Australia’s wine region, I think the story lacked something in terms of suspense. There was so much repetition and endless conversations between all the characters. The actual focus on solving of the mysteries comprised only a small fraction of the book.
