Story
When quiet Orrin and his extroverted best friend, Daniel, were transported to a strange RPG-based world, not much changed between them. Daniel became a hero of legend, while Orrin remained his unobtrusive shadow. Only when they faced a particularly lethal foe did Orrin step out of his comfort zone and display his true worth—with powers he didn't know he had. Of course, Daniel got all the glory, but Orrin doesn't mind. He's just happy they're both still alive.

Frustratingly dumb characters
Reviewed: 09-18-24
The characters are idiotic. The plot is mind numbing, I forced myself to finish, as the book occasionally gets interesting. The back and forth between our mains gets old and is childish.

The Monks more than most, actually live with and breed dogs, and have deep understanding of dog psychology.

What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

How much I did not know about the Chinese cultural revolution. An awful time in China.
Reviewed: 05-12-24
Absolute power corrupts. I drew parallels to the young of today being indoctrinated the same way the Chinese revolution did. Coach the young, plant seeds of discontent and unleashed without laws. Sanctioned murder and mayhem. I wanted to know more this horrific period of history after it’s briefly illustrated in the 3 body problem series. Anyone who thinks differently is persecuted, suffering beatings and public shaming. 1000s committed suicide, or were jailed and beaten. This book is an excellent primer to this subject.

There were many points about this book I liked but occasionally the foresight was lacking, these types need to be whip smart, equal to the villains. So much los due to neglect and naïveté.

Story
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platforms that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity’s broad history, mankind discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.
