About this listen

Did you suffer abuse or neglect as a child?

We know that one in seven children in the US has suffered from abuse in their families. Neglect is the most common form of child abuse. Authorities believe this is a conservative estimate given that many cases are unreported.

It's important to remember that "abuse" also refers to neglect. Childhood neglect is abuse. The effects of child abuse can be burdensome and far-reaching.

Some of these effects include:
• Shame about the abuse.
• Low self-esteem.
• Intrusive memories or flashbacks of the abuse.
• Problems with relationships, particularly intimate relationships.
• Feelings of continued vulnerability and distrust of others.
• Ongoing depression and anxiety, often undiagnosed and untreated.

For adult survivors of abuse and neglect, the three primary areas related to human rights are emotional needs, feelings, and boundaries. These three areas are referred to in this book as the "three stolen rights". If you were abused or neglected as a child, your rights were violated by a parent or caregiver in all three of these areas.

Being the adult child of an abusive or neglectful parent or caregiver doesn't determine your future. It is possible to heal and recover from your experience and reverse the long-term consequences of abuse.

Three Stolen Rights: How Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse and Neglect Can Claim Their Rights to Their Needs, Feelings, and Boundaries is the result of the author's many years of counseling both adolescents and adults abused or neglected in childhood.

This book guides you through each section, providing you with information and tools to address the rights you were denied. The goal is to validate your experience, assist you in healing the emotional wounds of your childhood, and provide direction in your recovery journey.

In this book, you will discover:

• Essential and specific needs every child (and adult) is entitled to.
• How addressing unresolved grief and loss can release some of the emotional
barriers to healing.
• Indicators that an adult survivor continues to experience toxic stress or traumatic reactions.
• Rules that operate in the abusive or neglectful family.
• How to acknowledge, identify, and express your feelings in a healthy manner.
• How our feelings are essential in providing valuable information that you can use in making
decisions or protecting your boundaries.
• Ways to boost and maintain a healthy self-esteem.
• How to determine who is a safe versus unsafe person in your daily interactions.
• The benefits of practicing healthy self-care.
• Tools for developing assertiveness and boundary setting.
• How joining a community of adult survivors of abuse can hasten your healing process.
• When to seek help from a mental health professional.
• The four primary components necessary in the recovery process.
• How to claim the fundamental, inviolable rights denied to you in childhood.

You don't need to have experienced abuse first-hand to benefit from this valuable knowledge. Whether a loving partner, spouse, friend, or co-worker, this information will help you understand what the abuse survivor is experiencing in their life. With such knowledge, you can offer meaningful support.

As an adult survivor, it is possible to break free from the trauma of abuse or neglect you experienced as a child or adolescent.

Eye-opening and very helpful.

Reading 3 Stolen Rights by Linda Young was incredibly eye-opening in understanding the background of a very toxic person in my life. Through listening to this audiobook I recognized what that person had been through in the past and how their way of relating to me is the direct result of childhood abuse. Although this does not change my need to remain separate from this person and their dangerous ways of relating to me, it does help me view them from a more compassionate place. I would highly recommend this book to survivors of childhood abuse who now find themselves struggling in close relationships, as well as to those who are friends or family of someone on a healing journey from their past woundedness.

I am especially appreciative of the explanation within this book of how to determine who is a safe person versus an unsafe person. This information resonated with me deeply and gave me a deep understanding of a previous relationship that I intuitively knew was not good for me but was drawn into nonetheless.

Empathetic and practical

You get the sense that Linda Young knows exactly what she is talking about. The book starts by helping you understand different family dynamics and figure out where you fall and then walks you to the place where you understand the effects of childhood trauma. I couldn't wait to get past those three chapters and get to what I imagined was the good stuff. I wasn't disappointed. You get to see our basic emotional needs, which I found very eye opening. This information was helping me deal with denial in my life and the final chapter sealed the deal. I feel like I have made major steps for myself because of this book.

Useful Resource for Victims of Abuse

"3 Stolen Rights" by Linda Young is a very intriguing book. Despite the fact that I did not endure any form of abuse throughout my childhood, I found that this audiobook has a lot to offer on a variety of different levels. I do believe that it might be a really helpful tool for adult children who have been abused by their parents, as well as for therapists, friends, and family members.
The wording was simple to listen to and comprehend in its entirety. The suggestions made seemed to be applicable and logical; they were things that I either want to try for myself or would want others to try for themselves.
The author brought up a number of compelling arguments, each of which was supported by a specific reference. The narration was done really nice as well. Overall, this audiobook is a very intriguing book, and I do recommend it!

Good resource to support processing of trauma

This is a very comprehensive resource that walks through types of trauma many children experience (trigger warning), how this impacts their development, and tools & strategies to develop to regain your sense of empowerment. Would be good alongside therapy to talk through pieces that resonate or those that still trigger, as some language could be activating. But overall a great resource to help you feel not so alone & know that you’re not broken

Excellent Resource

Although I did not suffer from childhood abuse, I found that this book has much to offer on many levels. I do think it would be a very useful tool for adult children of abusers but also for therapists, friends, and relatives. The writing was easy to listen to and understand. The ideas provided seemed practical and reasonable - things I either want to try or would recommend that others try. There were many strong points made by the author and backed up by selected references. All in all, I found this to be a very interesting book, that I do intend to go back to as I feel the need to explore the ideas. Narration was well-done,

Extremely helpful book!

There were a lot of things about this listen I liked, especially the recurring theme that what happened to you doesn't need to define you. I also appreciated the detailed, step-by-step recommendations of various approaches-because for most people it does take a multi-faceted approach to achieve results. Highly recommend!
