Publisher's summary

Theodora knows in her heart that she has star quality, but sadly, no one else in her theatrical family feels the same way. When her sister leaves to get married, Theo is promptly axed from the bill and expected to take a back seat in the family business.

Clem Dabney, aspiring theatre owner and ex-prizefighter, has built up his supper and song business as far as he can take it. In order to expand, he now needs a theatre. When Theodora appears before him with her outrageous proposition, he sees his chance, and devil take the consequences.

Their marriage is purely a business arrangement, so Theo is not worried about Clem’s reputation, and Clem is not concerned about Theo’s distinct lack of feminine charm. Now that’s all settled and out of the way, both agree things should be straightforward enough. But why is Clem acting like the jealous husband when Theo finds herself among a throng of new admirers?

A Contracted Spouse for the Prizefighter is a stand-alone Victorian romance novel. Please do not purchase if you are offended by strong language and or sex scenes.

WOW

I wast looking forward to this one as much as the other PF books. mostly because I love the prim fmc and savage mmc trope. That said, I think this is my favorite Coldbreath story to date. Theo is a character to adore, written with an innocence that doesn't distract from her genius one bit. I have never rooted for a character more than this one. It was so refreshing to see roles reversing during their intimacy, quite liberating in historical romances. And the narration was superb. masterfully done. I just can't recommend it enough.

Long But Wonderful

This is the longest book in this series, but I have enjoyed ALL of the Prizefighter books and simply adore the way the author writes. She’s awesome. I enjoyed this narrator also. It’s a shame that some of Alice Coldbreath’s other books were not performed buy this narrator. Well done!!

I enjoyed the other stories in this series but I didn’t feel connected to these characters until the last hour or so. Ugh

Full of Whiplash and Awkwardness

First, Alice Coldbreath is becoming my favorite author. So far I have listened to the Vawdrey Brothers series and now have finished the Prizedfighter series along with two more of her books. I love how she can take you away to a place, her characters are interesting and I really just like how she tells me a story. Also, I am full on addicted to her brand of romance....boy, can this woman serve up some romance!

That said, sadly, I didn't care for this book. At all. Im here to escape with my book-boyfriend but when finished I felt shredded. Clem was a whirlwind of emotional contradictions the entire time. During the story you know the reason for it, its not a big reveal in the last 45 min when all is out of the bag. But by then you just think he's so weak and changeable its hard to swallow. Too many hints at future infidelity. In the end I just didn't believe in their love. And maybe was a little insulted to have listened so long for it to all be wrapped up in a few sentences....the ending is just weird. The epilogue didn't save it, it was too little too late.

Throughout the story I didn't understand or relate to the couples dynamic. The tone and characters change in places that it seems those parts were written separately. Too much was said about how unattractive the mfc was, it stole away from the chemistry. Most of us find a person can become attractive or unattractive depending on personality, etc.. If the love interest is super unattractive physically they need to be charming, cunning, intelligent....something. This gal had some things going for her, but they didn't add up to attractiveness in a romantic sense.

A bit of a departure, but still delightful…

Anything Alice Coldbreath writes is pretty much an automatic buy for me— she reliably hits all of my favorite romance tropes (marriage of convenience, a competent heroine, a surly and possessive hero with very little self-awareness, etc.) with sweetness and humor.

The heroine of this book presents a bit of a change for people attached to shy heroines like Fenella or practical ones like Mina and Lizzie from the previous Prizefighter books. Theodora is unconventional, unafraid, and artistic. It’s not quite what I’m used to, but as a Mother Coldbreath completionist, it’s actually quite nice to see her stretching herself as a storyteller. Once I let go of my expectations, I thoroughly enjoyed Clem and Theodora’s romance and, of course, she still gives us the warm details of daily Victorian life and ewers of water that are essential to a Coldbreath book.

I was disappointed that Carmen Rose didn’t return to narrate this one— I think she’s so well suited to the rhythm of Coldbreath’s writing but Grace Noble did an excellent job.
