Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch is up to his neck in a case that has transfixed all of celebrity-mad Los Angeles: a movie director is charged with murdering an actress during sex, and then staging her death to make it look like a suicide. Bosch is both the arresting officer and the star witness in a trial that has brought the Hollywood media pack out in full-throated frenzy.

Meanwhile, Terry McCaleb is enjoying an idyllic retirement on Catalina Island when a visit from an old colleague brings his former world rushing back. It's a murder, the unreadable kind of murder he specialized in solving back in his FBI days. The investigation has stalled, and the sheriff's office is asking McCaleb to take a quick look at the murder book to see if he turns up something they've missed.

McCaleb's first reading of the crime scene leads him to look for a methodical killer with a taste for rituals and revenge. As his quick look accelerates into a full-sprint investigation, the two crimes - his murdered loner and Bosch's movie director - begin to overlap strangely. With one unsettling revelation after another, they merge, becoming one impossible, terrifying case, involving almost inconceivable calculation. McCaleb believes he has unmasked the most frightening killer ever to cross his sights. But his investigation tangles with Bosch's lines, and the two men find themselves at odds in the most dangerous investigation of their lives.

Wonderfully read. As dark a tale as the title would lead you to believe this story winds you through its plot at a deliciously heavy pace. A pace that has you yearning for the ending while hoping it never ends. Exceptionally well read the characters are well drawn and complex. What a great way to drive to and from work. I loved it!

I enjoyed this one. The details were great and even caused me to do a little research after the fact on some of the artwork mentioned in the book. It didn't drag out or make me want to fast foward so that was a plus.

I was uncomfortable with what appears to be the personality of Bocsh,. Also, the voice is becoming too harsh.

I found this book to be formulaic and phoned in. If McCaleb is such a great profiler that he needs to be called out of happy retirement, why did he try to make the little evidence he had fit his suspect? Any good agent knows this is one of the worst mistakes an investigator can make. And then everyone follows him blindly??? Took me out of the story. Hopefully book 8 is back to being fully thought out.

Felt phoned in

As all of his books, he gets a little long winded sometimes, but the book really comes together at the end! Worth reading (listening)!

good listen!

I definitely liked this book and liked the references to actual art work. There were times I was rasing my eyebrows at the actions of the characters....and part of the ending had a bit of wierdness to it by the main character... but I enjoyed the book and am glad I downloaded it.

Good Story, ok characters

Great detective writing with plenty of angst. After reading a couple of random stories from the series, I'm now starting with number one and working my way through. They are that good.

You can't beat a good Bosch story

I found myself leaning forward to hear the next line at times. A mystery with a thriller to the end...

Keeps you on the edge of your seat !!!

This was a very good book from beginning to end. If you can just get used to the non Dick Hill Len Carieau voices of Harry Bosch, you'll like it too.

Very good book

What made the experience of listening to A Darkness More than Night: Harry Bosch Series, Book 7 the most enjoyable?

Not what I was expecting, but okay story line

Have you listened to any of Richard M. Davidson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Have not listened to the narrator before. Wasn't as impressed with his reading. Made Bosch old and cranky sounding.

Any additional comments?

Kind of disappointed with this one.
