About this listen

A Wall Street Journal best seller.

For nearly 30 years a serial killer has been hiding in plain sight. So has the key to an FBI agent’s dark past.

A family is murdered as they sleep. FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera and her new team are tasked with determining whether there is any link between this attack and another triple homicide from four years earlier and more than 2,000 miles away. In the process, they’ll discover a serial killer so cunning that his grisly trail of death spanning nearly three decades has gone undetected. Each crime scene reminds Nina of the ghostly Latin folktale of La Llorona, which terrified her when she was an abandoned and vulnerable child. Now it’s back to haunt her.

Nina has known evil, but these macabre reenactments are as disturbing as they are baffling. Now she must uncover the meaning behind the rituals as the evidence leads her in an unexpected direction - far closer to home than anyone could have imagined. As the team narrows in on a suspect, the present collides with Nina’s past in a twist of fate that forces her to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Really enjoyed!

Story had a nice twist. Yeah I guessed it ahead of time but that didn’t detract from my enjoying the story.

Excellent listen

Between the storyline, narration, and development of characters I don’t know how this listen could get any better. The thrilling storyline kept me interested and the characters are awesome. Kudos for the narration.

Great story to listen to!

This story has plot turns that keep you twisting and wiggling. Wondering why and who did it right up to very end! Definitely a recommendation to anyone interested in great mysteries.

Struggled to finish this book

The book sounds like it was written by a child or for a child. She made the police and FBI look untrained and dumb. The events were all so predictable. The author over explained the most basic terminology.

More of a drama then a thriller

Not much of a thriller. Mostly about the main character's personal life. Also the protagonist having another deeply personal connection to the killer seems weak story telling.

Wow! Loved it.

I loved it. Had me crying at the end. I don’t like to write these. I normally just do stars and leave it at that. But when I do write, it’s because I loved the book.

Heart and Grit

Oh my. This story was packed with so much. So much... psychopath's crazy, bad decisions piled on top of more bad decisions, and the feelings... so much feels. Mystery solved and a happy ending. Bravo, Ms Maldonado. Bravo. I adore Nina Guerra. She's a badass with serious heart and grit.

Nina Guerrera takes on a serial Killer.

A Different Dawn was one of my choices to fulfil one of the achievements in the 2023 Winter Kinde challenge and having read/listen to The Cipher during the Summer challenge I figured I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to revisit Special Agent Nina Guerrera. While I was sure I knew what to expect based on my previous reading experience Isabella Maldonado sure threw me a curve ball with this story. Sure, it was filled with action, and it involved plenty of character interaction between Nina and the team as well as ultimately interaction with the unsub. What I did not see nor even remotely expect was how masterfully Isabella crafted this story to take the readers' emotions on a rollercoaster ride. I have no shame in saying she got this old guy having to wipe his eyes. You may ask why, and the answer is read A Different Dawn to find out. I can guarantee that I won’t be waiting over a week before I start reading The Falcon- Nina Gurerrera book 3. Once again, Roxanne Hernandez does an excellent job bringing the characters and story to life.

Interesting, enjoyable

I enjoyed Nina, her back story. It was a good listen. I enjoyed the alternating voices
