About this listen

Twenty-four years after losing her daughter in a tragic accident, Carol Denman has finally made peace with Katie's father. But releasing her ex-husband from blame and facing how deeply she held herself responsible were only the first steps in Carol's journey toward peace.

With the pain of her failed first marriage behind her, Carol is determined to mend her broken relationship with her mother. But she soon discovers she isn't the only one who has been hanging on to bitterness. A road trip to face the past leads Carol's mother, Judith, to unearth the seeds of past mistakes and deep resentments in ways neither of them would expect.

The roots of family animosity run deep and thick. While Judith seems hesitant to start digging, Carol commits to pruning away the thorns of the past so she no longer has to live a life without flowers.

Narration is awful

Memories come flying back but once Caroline stops running away from her mother and they both open up about the past then the future blooms into what will be Katie’s house.

I thought it was a little long, but a good story. It made me think back to my own teen years and not to take each moment for granted.

Reliving the past, forgiveness and moving on with her life. I enjoyed some of the humor in this book.

Sometimes you come across a book that really speaks to you. I had lost a little girl named Katie who had just started school and was run over by her school bus driver. I had recently lost my husband of 42 years, who was my rock and best friend.
My first love also lost the love of his life, two weeks after my husband’s death. I had always felt regret and guilt for how I had treated him. He was such a good person. After listening to this story I wanted to let go of the shame I had carried over the years and make peace with the past. I had heard from him when our daughter was killed and when our son died from a kidney disease. He had sent flowers and a letter.
I finally have the courage to send him a letter, and say the things I’ve wanted to say.

This book touched my heart

So far this series has helped me dig deep and think about unresolved issues. I have placed blame where the blame should be mine. I love that this story though fiction has helped me realize that.
I am, however, exhausted after listening because it’s hard to get past the robotic narration.

Cathartic

I did not like the robotic speech, but it was a little less noticeable than in the first book of the series. The storyline was good and there were several times that I thought, this is just like my life, so believable. It brought tears to my eyes as the characters navigated grief and came to understand how different generations handled life and death.

An all around good story

A heartwarming continuation of the first book. Loved the way the characters related to each other as the story unfolded.

Excellent

This was a great follow up to life without water. I have come to care about these characters and didn’t want the story to end
