About this listen

Different minds learn differently. That's an issue for many children, because most schools still cling to a one-size-fits-all education philosophy. As a result, children struggle because their learning patterns don't fit the schools they are in. Learning begins in schools, but it doesn't end there. Frustrating a child's desire to learn will have lifelong repercussions.

In A Mind at a Time, Dr. Mel Levine shows parents how to identify these individual learning patterns. He explains how parents and teachers can nurture a child's strengths and deal effectively with weaknesses. This type of teaching produces satisfaction and achievement for all students.

There are eight fundamental systems of learning that draw on a variety of neurodevelopmental capacities. Some students are strong in certain areas and some are strong in others, but no one is equally capable in all eight. Drawing from actual case studies, Dr. Levine shows how parents and children can identify their strengths and weaknesses to determine their individual ways of learning.

We must pay attention to individual learning patterns, to individual minds so that we can maximize children's performance in school and in life. In A Mind at a Time, Dr. Levine shows us how.

"Levine's soft-spoken reading style lends to the [program] a personal, compassionate, and reassuring tone that would be lost in the written word." (Publishers Weekly)

A Mind at a Time

For me and having a child "Label" as PTSD, and while hearing and listening the words of Dr. Mel Levine. I find those words (each one) to be very helpfull to my child progress.

Levine shines

Dr. Levine has provided more than a book, he's provided an opportunity to see learning through the lens of a child with difficulties. While the reading style makes me sleepy, I stayed with it until I heard it all, then listened to the whole book twice more. I feel that the perspective provided from Dr. Levine's experience coupled with the "in the kids own words" pieces which were mesmerizing, make this book of particular interest to anyone who has sought to understand, truly understand the struggles kids go through and the things we might do to help.

A Mind At a Time

This is an awesome book that has helped me to understand my child's learning difference and enjoy raising her. I used to be overly worried about the things she has a hard time doing, this book shows us why and how to help.( instead of feeling helpless) It encourages parents to focus on what their child is really good at.Dr Levine helps us to give our kids the self confidence they need to succeed.A great book for parents with "LD' kids.

Well read, great information, thought provocative

I'm looking forward to more of his books as he's quite relatable and all of us can identify on some level.

Excellent read for educators and parents

Very positive interventions to build on children's strengths, rather than dwell on deficiencies. Excellent training opportunities!

If you want to go to sleep, this is a good one

One of the worst audio-books I have ever encountered.

The readers tone is non-engaging and not interesting. I could not hold my attention span for more than a minute and seriously thought that I had ADD. Luckily the author suggests that most of these problems are OK to have and can be overcome.
The solutions though are common-sense for the most part and anyone can easily figure out.

Unless you have a child with problems and want to feel unconcerned about it, I would not recommend this book.

I do agree with the author that medication is not the solution to most of these issues.

Great content, poor reading

This is a fantastic book in terms of content. It is , however, too bad that either Mel or the publisher decided it made sense for him to read it. His reading style is so dry and monotonous it makes me think I would do better with the printed book rather than the audio.
