About this listen

The riskier the wager....

Everyone knows that Gemma Templeton is a wonderful, cheerful, friendly young woman who is well worth one’s acquaintance. She is vibrant and warm, and plays the violin with exquisite talent. The only thing she lacks is a husband, and time is growing short for her in that regard. When an interesting opportunity arises from an unlikely source, Gemma’s future is suddenly far more appealing, and a small wager makes all the difference.

The sweeter the return....

What everyone does not know is that a certain man of a less warm reputation is very much interested in changing Gemma’s unmarried state, and he doesn’t care what anybody says. Lucas Sinclair, Lord Blackmoor, is a dark mark upon the face of society, and his unexpected interest in Gemma leaves many to wonder if his motives don't hide some sinister purpose. He takes her ridiculous wager, and will stop at nothing to see it paid.

Great read!

I loved this book! I found it on audioboom and am so glad. I couldn’t put it down (or pause it I guess) I loved everything from the storyline to the narration to the characters. I will definitely go back and purchase the entire series.

Yet Another Winner

This one had my nerves a little more jangled than the others. I did get quite frustrated at the negative depiction each of the main characters had of themselves but, I suppose that was the author's intent.

I can only hope the next book is about either the Grangers or Lord Marlow. Hurry and push to Audible. (Please and thank you.)

Great start but weak ending

This story has such a great start then got sabotaged by filler to unsuccessfully increase the angst. Personally I couldn’t make the character arch for the hero. Confident then not confident then confident again. The extravagance of hyperbole in the back half of the story made me barely able to endure until the end to confirm who the villain was. I say confirm because it was a weak attempt to hide what any reader with sense could figure out.

Well-developed characters and interesting story

There is something undeniably sexy about sincerity and forthrightness when it comes to mutual attraction, and the two principal characters deliver that in spades. The whimsical wager at the beginning of the story is both original and flirty. Add a mysterious past, a dash of villainous intrigue from various antagonists, and excellent narration (Jessica Elisa Boyd does decent accents and good male and female voices), and the result is a very entertaining audio book indeed! I enjoyed the fact that the reference to the wager is carried full circle throughout the story. Well done, Rebecca Connolly! I'm going to check out more of the series.

Binge worthy

This is probably one of the best books by this author and in the series. This is the second time I’ve read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Blackmore is swoon worthy : dark and mysterious and Gemma is a fun character. The characters have depth. One criticism I have about the story is why Blackmore thinks he needs to stay away from his wife in order to protect her. You would think it would be the opposite. Other than that, this story is fabulous. The narration is also excellent.

Pros and cons

Overall I enjoyed the story… enjoyed the banter between the two main characters… The male main character behaved a little ridiculous trying to maintain distance from his wife… the capture of the main character was a little unrealistic.. Found the behavior of the so called high society very annoying and childish.. Enjoyed the main characters getting to know one another..
