Dale Stewart's life has become a shadow of what it once was. A respected college professor and successful novelist, he sabotaged his career and his marriage with an obsessive love affair that ended badly.

With darkness closing in on him, Dale decides to return to his boyhood home in Illinois. Drawn by a recurring nightmare that has plagued him since his youth—and a troubling certainty that something is waiting for him there—he hopes to exorcise his demons.

In the last hours of Halloween, he reaches the outskirts of the dying town of Elm Haven. There, he moves into the abandoned farmhouse that was once the home of his closest boyhood friend, the strange and brilliant Duane McBride, who lost his young life in a grisly "accident" back in the terrible summer of 1960. Hoping to find peace in isolation, he settles in for the long, harsh winter.

But Dale is not alone. Soon after he arrives, cryptic messages begin appearing mysteriously on his computer screen while he struggles to work on his novel. He sees black dogs roaming the grounds. And an old enemy has reemerged, a bully who seems as determined to persecute Dale as he was in childhood.

I loved this book and recommend it highly to anyone who like paranormal thrillers. The authors quirky sense of humor was surprising and I actually found myself occasionally laughing out loud midst a few intense suspenseful moments. The main character, Dale was so down to earth, relatable and realistic in real life. I wish all books were this well rounded. I'm a fan forever of this author!!!

Absolutely great! Thrilling, suspense and humor

The story wasn't quite as horrific as its predecessor, but it's a quieter and more subtle story that contains delightful small teasers of tension throughout, laced with humor. There are moments of riveting and terrifying action, but these are fewer than in the first novel. This one draws you in with a greater sense of mystery and contemplative mood. I had a lot of fun with it.

A wonderfully written sequel to "Summer of Night".

I loved summer of night. this was good but I wish it went deeper into saying who was typing in his ThinkPad and if Duane was really there, and why did he keep talking in that other language If it was really him. what was cj Congdon was he really there was he a ghost ? why were the skin heads after him and hiw were they real people there at the same time as cj. it said the face morphed from cj to the skin head. I thought another haunting had a deep secret. who was the mystery person seen at the cemetery with now face earlier? I wish the skinheads were killed they were scumbags. was there an evil forces after him, what hooked with his girlfriend why didn't the ThinkPad ask If he killed Clair? and Michelle stagney she was really a ghost but she was sold form I wish she would have came back again. why didn't she visit then very weird and the dogs what were that ghosts or real ? why did they have to drag Michelle if rhey were all not real ? alot of unanswered questions. it still kept me on edge to some extent. summer of night left alot of unanswered questions I never got but it's still one of the best books I ever read. summer of night probably would be just about the best book if it ended better but the characters were so good that it was still one if the best. I loved the character of daleso the back story of that made this more interesting.

mystery of what was true and false

The narrator is excellent but I could not find the point of the story.

Long story that went nowhere

This book had some major creepiness, though not to the extent of the first novel. The narrator did a pretty good job, but I didn’t like the falsetto he used when voicing women. Dale Stewart was also a pretty unlikeable protagonist. By the end I didn’t feel one way or the other about him.

Not as good as Summer of Night

Bronson is what kept me listening. He's an amazing narrator and storyteller. This book just wasn't scary for me. Also, lots of "things" begin to happen but never come full circle. They just kinda get lost in the rest of the story.

Good story, just didn't love it.

I really enjoyed this book. It was realistic not some odd ball ghost story! The end actually through me off which I absolutely loved!

Rambling, story all over the place not my cup of tea. If you are a Lit. major you will enjoy it i suppose . Dubbing was very noticeable.

I loved it. I loved the characters and their story. Now I need to back track to Mike's story. The narration was excellent also.

Great
