About this listen

Captain Jacob Thomas, USMC, is a divorced combat veteran just trying to get his life back on track. Returning to the marine corps after a failed attempt at reconciliation with his estranged wife, Jake volunteers for a DARPA experiment that catapults him into a future where humanity has been stripped of 200 years of technological advancements and more than half its population. With the help of a faceless benefactor named Alice, he escapes the confines of an abandoned lab facility and starts a journey to put Earth back on a path to recovery. Jake's path begins in the rich farmlands of central California and eventually places him in orbit and face to face with the very evil that started it all.

Fair concept ridiculous at times, okay overall.

The scifi portions of this story are interesting and engaging. The social interaction is ridiculous at best. Written by a seemingly adolescent author with dreams of harems and only seeming passing knowledge of female behavior and motivation.

Yes there are sexual situations and suggestions

Don't know what all the fuss in the other reviews is about it was tame and in keeping with the story line. based on some reviews I expected non stop orgy descriptions.

Enjoyed it, good story and good reader.

Decent story, really weak performance

I enjoyed the story. However the narrator's lack of voice range and acting skill detract from the novel.

good and bad

What made the experience of listening to Alice the most enjoyable?

it was a fun read, over all, has some problems but over all, fun.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Drummond?

anyone else, not enough voice variations.

Any additional comments?

First the good. I enjoyed it. it was fun and kept my interest throughout.
the cons: the reader has only one voice and it is sometimes hard to tell who is speaking. Also very little dramatization.
The adolescent male fantasy aspect was so bad that is actually got in the way of the story telling. The constant trading off (and comments by) the protagonists' harem was distracting though it did stop short of being explicit, so, no porn. Everything he tried no matter how far fetched still worked perfectly, solid future fantasy rather that science fiction.
But, I did enjoy it. and I will read the next round to see where the author goes. looks like a first novel. but fun.

not the best

it's not terrible but the narrator just kind of reads he doesn't put a whole lot of emphasis on anything in his voice the book is just not very exciting it has a lot of great ideas and I love where the story starts and goes to. but it's very predictable and some parts drive me crazy just seems like it was not very thought-out and some places

Nice easy going storyline

What did you love best about Alice?

Now I like this series. The main character is a bit over-sexed but the dynamics of the interpersonal relationships contributes to the story. I do like that things get accomplished without the main character reeling from one disaster to the next like a drunken sailor. Sometimes if the switch needs to be pressed just let the character press it, not have to scale a mountain, fight a tiger, and lose a kidney. The pace and style are easy one th mind and help with the "suspension of reality" Drummond did a great job with te story and characters. I've finished all of the series and am looking forward to more.

Very enjoyable.

I enjoyed this first book. I like SCIFI and
found this entertaining. Enough so that I
had to stay up way past my bed time to finish it. I look forward to the rest of the
series.
