About this listen

Twenty-five years ago, the Overseers conquered Earth and enslaved humanity. The time to fight back has come....

Alec works in the Detroit Overseer-factories, building a mysterious alien device. When three strangers appear, he's provided an opportunity to escape after years of servitude.

Cole, a Freeborn loner, encounters Lina after her village is destroyed by the alien Occupation. Together, they make the arduous journey to a fabled safe-zone, trying to stay one step ahead of the enemy drones on their trail.

Dex is a Hunter, working for the Occupation to track down escaped factory slaves, or Roamers, at all costs. But his latest hunt uncovers a massive secret and threatens his loyalty to the Overseers.

All their fates are bound. For the first time in decades, a secret enclave of alien resistance fighters known as the Reclaimers prepare to make their move.

Great Read

This is my first read from this author and I really enjoyed it. I knew with Ray Porter as narrator it would be good. Plenty of action and suspense with a mind boggling end along with a great story of alien invasion. I hope the rest of the series goes as well. Highly recommended.

While waiting for next Galaxy’s Edge read this!

Who will like this? Pretty much anyone who appreciates being drawn into the different characters’ stories as much as the sci-fi / alien occupying earth concept. There is definitely a little gore and violence here, but not remotely in the same league as the Galaxy’s Edge or Ember War series.

Is it a slow or fast start? Fast. Definitely doesn’t take long to get invested in the stories. Some may feel it moves too fast because it doesn’t get too bogged down in the details. Personally, this is what I wanted this week. Just good storytelling with good narration.

Notes on the narrator: I like Ray Porter more and more every time I listen to his work. He’s great with distinctive male voices and accents. He’s also perfect if you like to increase the speed and keep the quality of the narration intact, He’s not the best at creating female voices, but they are definitely good enough to keep you in the story.

Final Thoughts: What a great series. Three books - all three very good and easy listens. Very character driven. Refreshingly light on technical jargon. Nothing tired or stale here - the only common fare is a few humorous pop culture references that help the reader relate to how much has been lost in such a short time. It also makes true space opera and sci-fi fans feel at home with a welcoming nod or two by way of older characters in the story using jargon from our favorite space opera movies to talk over the heads of young adults born after the occupation.

Well done

Really good - well written - good thriller - I could listen to Porter read a damn telephone book.

Slow and disjointed

Understanding this is book one of series it still felt slow. The performance was uncomfortably slow and that was at an increased audio speed. The story itself bounced around so many characters with such little depth and connection. I kept wanting more and was hopeful but in the end there was no resolution for this story.

Truly excellent read

Stunningly good book. Love the character driven story. I couldn’t put it down! If you like a dystopian read this is the one.

Good to waste time

I liked the concept. Aliens have invaded taken over... However, very little character development. No heroism. There is nothing to say “what is going to happen to that character.?“. Its a story, nothing more.

Great Series

The Rise is a great series. It is well written and fast pasted with great characters and interesting plot and plot twists. It is worth buying all three in the series. I usually stay away from series, if I can but this sounded interesting, and it was well worth it. I have over 400 books and this series is well up there with very few others
