About this listen

Carla Karolac is doing just fine. Having escaped the clutches of her controlling mother and founded a successful writing retreat in which participants are confined to windowless cells until they hit their daily word count, she lives a comfortable, if solitary, existence. If only her therapist, Toonie, would stop going on about Carla's nonexistent love life and start addressing her writer’s block, she might be able to make some progress. But then Carla finds Toonie murdered, and suddenly her unfinished memoir is the least of her concerns. Without quite knowing why, she dials an old phone number.

Amy Gallup, retired after decades as a writing instructor, is surprised to hear from her former student Carla out of the blue, three years since they last spoke. She’s even more shocked when she finds out the reason for Carla's call. Suddenly, she finds herself swept up in a murder investigation that soon brings her whole old writing group back together. But they’ll need all the help they can get, as one murder leads to another and suspicions of a serial killer mount across San Diego.

Full of Jincy Willett’s trademark dark humor, an unforgettable cast of characters, and two of the most endearingly imperfect protagonists who have ever attempted to solve a murder, Amy Among the Serial Killers shows us what can be gained when we begin to break down our own walls and let others inside…as long as they aren’t murderers.

Amy is so awesome

The Amy Gallup trilogy is such a treat for readers and (would be) writers. Willett's sense of humor works for me every time.

I love Jincy

definitely funny, however, the plot was reminiscent of a Shakespearean comedy: too many characters.

interesting but falls short

Populated by the least likeable characters who were rendered in a snarky tone by the nasally narrator, this book has nothing to offer except a potentially interesting storyline that had barely begun to take off after an hour of backstory and sarcasm. I gave up at that point.

Needs a better narrator

I’d heard so much about this book - I have read the others in this series - and the audio version that I was a bit meh about starting it.

Now I wished that I’d started this earlier. A fully developed novel with characters and feelings that I could understand if not empathize with - despite it being a particularly gory murder mystery. Really really good!

I’m definitely picking up the authors earlier works now.

and it’s not even accurate. The story isn’t really about Amy, but rather a group of writers who can’t get inspired enough to write anything. There is also only one serial killer, and her motive for picking off the writers in the group was a total let down. The characters were flat, and the elusive details provided about them left me more confused than ever. The deaths were gruesome, yet none of the characters were ever disturbed by the gore or mournful of the deceased. It was a strange and pointless book.

The title is the best part

Maybe it would be better read than listened to. A lot of random things thrown in one book. Several directions it could have went in but didn’t.

Worst thing I’ve listened to this year.

A childish book with annoying characters and the narrators voice is obnoxious. Would not recommend for anyone over 20!

Horrible

I love dark comedy, so I thought this would be for me. Unfortunately I found it very lacking in dark or comedy. There’s very little character development, but a lot of characters.

I just couldn’t get into it
