About this listen

Set in a fractured United States, in the southwestern country now known as Texoma. A world where magic is acknowledged but mistrusted, especially by a young gunslinger named Lizbeth Rose. Battered by a run across the border to Mexico Lizbeth Rose takes a job offer from a pair of Russian wizards to be their local guide and gunnie. For the wizards, Gunnie Rose has already acquired a fearsome reputation and they’re at a desperate crossroad, even if they won’t admit it. They’re searching through the small border towns near Mexico, trying to locate a low-level magic practitioner, Oleg Karkarov. The wizards believe Oleg is a direct descendant of Grigori Rasputin, and that Oleg’s blood can save the young tsar’s life.

As the trio journey through an altered America, shattered into several countries by the assassination of Franklin Roosevelt and the Great Depression, they’re set on by enemies. It’s clear that a powerful force does not want them to succeed in their mission. Lizbeth Rose is a gunnie who has never failed a client, but her oath will test all of her skills and resolve to get them all out alive.

I enjoyed the voice actors and the story! unique twist by altering outcomes from history to create new "world" . . I was hesitant as I am not a "western" fan... however I was pleasantly surprised and captivated and entertained and now look forward to reading more in this series...

author has her unique style and creative stories... that captivated me to read the Sookie Stackhouse series and watch all of the TruBlood series... I enjoy her ability to portray various characters especially her descriptive ability to capture almost "realistic" and relatable "normal lives" "average people" ....

western dystopian

The rating is wonderful and engaging. The characters are interesting and the world building as well done.

Great start to a new - to me - series

“Killers got to kill”
If you like spaghetti westerns and urban fantasy, then the weird western genre is for you. This series embraces the gritty, frontier justice style of westerns, but adds magic to the gun show.

“Good shootin.”
I liked the greetings and rejoinders, especially between the Gunners like Lizzy Rose. There’s an ongoing theme of sexual assault that, although vaguely written, listeners should be prepared for. Both the graphic audio and traditional formats were free, so I listened to each; usually, one or the other is clearly superior but here I enjoyed both for slightly different reasons. This version cuts hours off the length, adds gunshots, wind blowing and leather creaking sounds, and Eli’s Russian accent, which helped to sell that Unforgiven vibe (I could hear the tumbleweeds rolling). I’ll definitely move on under either format.

“Easy death”
Other weird western books if this wets your whistle, in order of the ones that did it for me, from weirdest best to passable:
🌵River of Teeth by Sarah Gailley- two alternate history novellas with killer hippos and LGBTQ characters
🌵Six Gun Tarot, by R.S. Belcher- if you want to lean farther into horror (I prefer the traditional audio)
🌵Tread of Angels by Rebecca Roanhorse- a novella like Twelve Angry Men on the supernatural frontier
🌵Deadman’s Road by Joe Landsdale- it’s Deadwood meets Cthulhu.
🌵Dead Man’s Hand, an anthology edited by John Joseph Adams- a good variety of novellas
🌵Infinite Dusk series by Harmon Cooper- if you like progression, cultivation fantasy
🌵Black Badge series by Rhett C Bruno- I loved the Dead Acre novella and the creature features,
but the series dragged with a confusing angels, demons, and gods mythos.

Weird Western entertainment

The voice acting is great and with the sound effects and vivid descriptions you “see” all the action. I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the series.

This is a different spin on the Russian royal family mixed with the Western feel I enjoyed with the Midnight Texas series

What engaging entertainment if you don't mind a Western dystopia-type story with lots of shooting of guns and running from wizards. It fit the bill for me particularly because I listened with GraphicAudio's excellent production. As for Gunnie Rose - loved her character.
