About this listen

As in the original novel, the story follows two relationships: the tragic adulterous romance of Anna Karenina and Count Alexei Vronsky, and the much more hopeful marriage of Nikolai Levin and Kitty Shcherbatskaya. These four, yearning for true love, live in a steampunk-inspired 19th century of mechanical butlers, extraterrestrial-worshiping cults, and airborne debutante balls. Their passions alone would be enough to consume them — but when a secret cabal of radical scientific revolutionaries launches an attack on Russian high society’s high-tech lifestyle, our heroes must fight back with all their courage, all their gadgets, and all the power of a sleek new cyborg model like nothing the world has ever seen.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If they were at all interested in steampunk or classics, I would. It's quite a long read, but enjoyable for the right reader.

What did you like best about this story?

It kept me on the edge of my seat and had a lot of ambiguity, which I found interesting.

Which character – as performed by Susan Duerden – was your favorite?

Hmm, that's tough. Probably Levin (I don't think I spelled that correctly).

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Toward the end, yes. It was quite long, though.

Any additional comments?

I'm almost afraid to read Anna Karenina now, because I don't want it to be different from this book.

A very surprising and enjoyable read

Buying this audiobook was my own stupidity. I KNOW that I don't like the bastardized versions of classics....but I thought this could be done in a fun way. Nope.
The added/changed details were described as if we would know (or care) about the differences between a Governess #213 (or whatever) vs. a Household 123.... model names and numbers of androids - as if we would know. Story would have flowed much better if it was merely titled Droid.
Unless you are a glutton for punishment or just have money to blow....save yourself some pain and expense. Don't purchase.

Don't bother
