About this listen
On Prince Edward Island, aging siblings Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to adopt a boy to help with chores around the farm. But when Mathew arrives at the train platform, the only living creature in sight, legs dangling from the piles of shingles where she sits, is a freckled, green-eyed, redheaded little girl. Mathew senses immediately that life at Green Gables is going to be very different. And how right he is. The independent and fiery girl, Anne, changes the Cuthberts' lives immeasurably, and for the better.

Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town.

GRANDMA WAS JIGGING

Editorial reviews
Narrator Barbara Caruso's engaging descriptions of Green Gables, a farm on Prince Edward Island, takes listeners there as they make the acquaintance of a special 11-year-old, Anne Shirley. Caruso also perfectly captures feisty Marilla Cuthbert and her shy brother, Matthew, who begins most of his sentences with a hesitant, old-fashioned "Well now . . ." Her best creation is Anne, who displays exuberance or the depths of despair, depending on the situation. The friends and neighbors Anne meets in her new home are realistic as they warm to her sweet nature. Listeners will enjoy meeting orphan Anne and her unlikely new family.

"The sweetest creation of child life yet written." (Mark Twain)

Story
Fifty-five years ago, Helen L. Taylor took John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and simplified the vocabulary and concepts for young listeners while keeping the storyline intact. The result was a classic in itself, which has now sold over 600,000 copies. It's both a simple adventure story and a profound allegory of the Christian journey through life, a delightful listen with a message kids ages six to 12 can understand and remember. A new look for today's children enlivens the journey to the Celestial City.

A Classic
Any additional comments?
This is a timeless gem of a novel. I loved the book when I was a young girl and I still love it now when I am 67. It makes smile, laugh and cry. The characters in the small community featured in this book become real due to the author's talent in creating and describing them. The book chronicles how Anne (spelled with an "e") comes by mistake to Avon Lea and the house known as Green Gables. Brother and sister (Matthew and Murila) own Green Gables and they needed a boy to come help aging Matthew with the farm work. They sent to the orphanage for a boy but the message was garbled and they got a girl. They planned to send her back, but things happened. Anne is a heap of trouble, but she is a bright and shinning joy. It is such a satisfying story. I will love it always. As an aside, there is a wonderful movie (I think it was a TV series) of this book. I have watched it and the sequels several times. The actors are fantastic and the movie follows the book perfectly.

EVERY SUCEEDING THRILL WAS THRILLER THAN THE LAST
I'M I TALKING TOO MUCH?
Another great selection from the kids section. Anne, which should always be spelled with an E., is a very talkative, red headed eleven year old orphan. Anne thinks she is ugly and she has been told that to her face by adults, but she does not let that get her down, matter of fact, she is one of the most positive minded people you will ever meet. IF YOU CAN'T BE CHEERFUL, BE AS CHEERFUL AS YOU CAN.
YOUR BOTH QUEER ENOUGH, IF THAT'S WHAT YOU MEAN BY KINDERED SPIRTS.
Anne's adoptive mother, although she is always called by her first name, and never called mother, finds it necessary to bring the daydreaming overly dramatic Anne down to Earth. It is harder to tell who has a bigger influence on who though.
THERE IS NOTHING MORE AGGRAVATING THAN A MAN WHO WON'T TALK BACK, UNLESS IT IS A WOMAN WHO WON'T TALK BACK
The adopting father, who is also called by his first name and never dad, is the strong silent type. He is deafly scared of females, but easily falls for Anne. He was expecting a boy to help him on the farm, but Anne's honesty and wonderful outlook on life captures his soul. Without saying a word or putting down his foot, he lets his wife know, he wants Anne to stay.
I PUT MY HAND TO THE PLOW AND I AIN'T LOOKING BACK
I have had this in my library for a year and a half. I bought it in some sale. I was worried about it being a kid's book and it being so long in comparison to most kid books. Silly of me, as I always have better luck in liking the kid's books. I honestly think, a lot of them are better written, than adult books.
IT'S BEEN THE DREAM OF MY LIFE, WELL ATLEAST FOR THE LAST SIX MONTHS
Caruso is excellent. I believe there are 62 different recordings of this book available. Some may be as good as this, but I can't see any of them being better.

Glorious Trip Down Memory Lane.
Where does Anne of Green Gables rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It is definitely up in top. I have read a lot of Audio books. This was my grandmother's beloved book when I was a child. I still have it. What a flood of memories listening to this caused. Amazingly unexpected, like running into an old childhood friend.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Anne of course but they are all wonderful characters.
Have you listened to any of Barbara Caruso’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not but she is wonderful.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Glorious Trip Down Memory Lane.

Exceptional writing, excellent characters, wonderful stories
Great to read as an adult and with young adults. Anne has a dramatic imagination and is always into into some kind of minor trouble. Marilla is stern and sensible. It is lovely to see Marilla soften as she comes to love Anne and see Anne develop into an intelligent young woman. Matthew adores Anne from the beginning. The narration is lovely. This is a world I would like to escape to.

A Wonderful and Timeless Story
Barbara Caruso captures the story of Anne and her adventures perfectly, narrating with just the right voice. It's been years and years since I read this story and as a girl, but I love it as much today as I did then.
