Publisher's summary

Lieutenant Ashwin Malhotra is a Makhai soldier - genetically engineered to be cold, ruthless. Unfeeling. His commanding officers consider him the perfect operative, and they're right. Now, he has a simple mission: to infiltrate Gideon's Riders, the infamous sect of holy warriors that protects the people of Sector One.

He's never failed to execute an objective, but there's one thing he didn't anticipate: running into Dr. Kora Bellamy, the only woman to ever break through his icy exterior.

When Kora fled her life as a military doctor for the Makhai Project, all she wanted was peace - a quiet life where she could heal the sick and injured. The royal Rios family welcomed her like a sister, but she could never forget Ashwin. His sudden reappearance is a second chance - if she can manage to touch his heart.

When the simmering tension between them finally ignites, Kora doesn't realize she's playing with fire. Because she's not just falling in love with a man who may not be able to love her back. Ashwin has too many secrets - and one of them could destroy her.

Contains mature themes.

There's no place like the Sectors!

Ashwin hits all the right notes for a complicated love story in a complicated place. The development of both main characters through all their relationships kept me engaged from start to finish. #devotion #postapocalypse #societymaking #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

This is definitely a great start to the series. I did like the narrator and the storyline that develops. The characters definitely come to life!!

Great Narrated Version

I’ve bought the ebooks as they have been released, but I’m so glad you had audio versions recorded. I’m spoiled on listening while I read (although this isn’t synced with the kindle edition yet-lazy me, I have to manually swipe for the next page as I listen) 😝

Thank you both for writing such engaging series. That includes the Beyond series as well as Gideon’s Riders. I was super disappointed when Beyond ended but I’m very happy with this spinoff and even happier that you found a good versatile narrator to read it. She does a great job. Kudos!!!! And please please keep them coming. When sector 1 is done give us another sector (8 or 2 maybe) or the mountain area or really anywhere else in this amazing post-apocalyptic world you both have created!!

HIGHLY recommended but if you’re new to this author collaboration, then be sure to start with the Beyond series. Beyond Shame is book 1.

A killer read

A story that is beautiful and fun in a dark future. Love to hate the characters, that come to life with great dialog and all you need is more.

Size (and spice) matters

This series picks up a few months after this author-duo’s Beyond series ends, and provides shorter books than both the original series and the next spin-off Mercenary Librarian series. I figured that shorter might work better for me, because with the romance genre, I don’t need intricate world building or hugely credible plots; I just need chemistry. As it turns out, it’s not about the size of the book.😜

The Beyond series sometimes ran long. However, what separates that series from the pack is the kink within the apocalypse setting. That series introduced me to the smutpocalypse subgenre of romance. Doms, toys, bdsm, same sex, throuples, quadouples… all within a biker/fight club/dystopian world combined to hold my interest. The two narrators for that series helped sell the sizzle. Whoo, the sizzle!

Here, sadly, there’s little sizzle. I was really hoping Ashwin would give me some super-soldier-smolder.
I think it was a combination of a few things. First, Ashwin’s backstory involves being genetically created to be as cold and calculated as possible. In the Beyond series, his cameos built him up perfectly to be the scary cyborg-like MC, but here I was left wanting him to break out of his conditioning in the name of love. Second, there’s very little action in this book. It’s mostly just Ashwin as a cold fish out of water, trying to fit in with Gideon’s group. Third, the narrator’s nasal, stilted voice upped the robotic feel and dimmed the sexiness. I prefer the narrator better as an author (T Eby). It wasn’t terrible, just rather vanilla, especially considering the series that birthed this one.

Not a fan of the narrator.

I was looking forward to this book so much. The narrator killed it. She sounds like a robot.
