Publisher's summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Avatar, the Last Airbender: The Rise of Kyoshi and Avatar, the Last Airbender: The Shadow of Kyoshi comes the thrilling third chapter in the Chronicles of the Avatar series.

Yangchen’s inexperience may prove to be her greatest asset.

Plagued by the voices of Avatars before her for as long as she can remember, Yangchen has not yet earned the respect felt for Avatar Szeto, her predecessor. In an era when loyalty is bought rather than earned, she has little reason to trust her counsel.

When Yangchen travels to Bin-Er in the Earth Kingdom on political business, a chance encounter with an informant named Kavik leads to a wary partnership. Bin-Er is a city ruled by corrupt shang merchants who have become resentful of the mercurial Earth King and his whims. To extract themselves from his influence, the shangs have one solution in mind: a mysterious weapon of mass destruction that would place power squarely in their hands.

As Yangchen and Kavik seek to thwart the shangs’ plan, their unlikely friendship deepens. But for Yangchen to chart her course as a singularly powerful Avatar, she must learn to rely on her own wisdom above all else.

This propulsive third installment in the Chronicles of the Avatar series illuminates Avatar Yangchen’s journey from uncertain young woman to revered leader.

Interesting POV of a former Avatar

Yang Chen's true expertise in the covert and her experience with her Past Lives was an inspired Choice. I absolutely Loved it. The best kind of prequels are ones that help to fill out a loved character or shine them in a different light, and this book, along with the Kyoshi novels do that in spades. I liked the glimpse of Yang Chen from the TV show, and the glimpses of how even someone as temporally close to her as Kyoshi viewed her, but with the context that this novel brings, it seems like I have another contender for my favorite Avatar iteration.
I can't wait for the next book.

wonderful

I always enjoy the Avatar books by F. C. Yee. the way the story plays out and the description of each and every character draws you into the story. Almost as if you were standing next to the characters as the story unfolds. I look forward to the next installment of the series.

AWSOME!

amazing story but sometimes it was a little hard to follow when it went between kavik and yangchen but that just might be me. I still loved this book though! and its really cool to see the way the people thought about yangchen in kyoshi's time vs. when yangchen was first starting out.

They knocked it out of the park again

F.C. Yee and Nancy Wu are both so brilliant. It's amazing to listen to my childhood grow up with me through these novels.

Always amazing from FC Yee.

I really liked this book and the performance of it by nancy wu. I fell in love with the Kyoshi books about a year ago and coming to this one my expectations were pretty high and almost all them were hit and some exceeded.

(Spoilers past this point!) I didn’t like how much a lot of yangchens childhood was skipped and how we didn’t get a ton her talking with her past lives, like with kyoshi and aang, until she said she had with the old woman. It felt like a lot of yangchens character was brushed over were as kyoshi was fleshed out to the max.

Either way. It’s a FC yee work and I’m so happy to see we’re getting more stories of past avatars.

Yangchen isn't as innocent as she seemed

I won't compare to kyoshi story. this is a different avatar. I see a great build up coming. hoping to learn certain origins in the next book to come. Also what will become of kavik!? I appreciate these books dedicated to the hardcore fans 👍

Cannot Wait for Book 2

I absolutely love the world of Avatar. This story drops a lot of the lore from the shows, and further displays that every Avatar has their own unique struggles. Yangchen was not what I expected at all personality wise, she actually reminds me a lot of Korra (with more self composure). I am so interested to see how they continue the story, and learning more about the old school White Lotus. I love that they can bounce around in time telling different stories of different Avatars, and they all blend together one way or another. I wonder if they’ll dive into Yangchen’s mistakes that are mentioned in Kyoshi’s books
