About this listen

What kind of power is lurking inside him?

After a year of training to become a dragonrider, Jaevid Broadfeather has been sent home to rest during a three-month interlude. But when he returns to find the king drake has chosen Beckah Derrick as his new rider, Jaevid realizes something big is about to happen.

Every fiber of his being is pushed to the breaking point as Jaevid battles through his avian year, preparing for the final graduation test of the battle scenario. But there is more standing in his way than a few push-ups and fancy sword moves. Jaevid must face a new fear as he is tormented by a gruesome nightmare of a mysterious gray elf warrior murdering the royal family of Maldobar. It seems obvious to him that this is some kind of message about how the war started long ago - until Felix assures him the king is very much alive.

With his strange powers growing stronger by the day and that violent dream replaying in his mind every night, Jaevid no longer wonders if he will pass his avian year or not - he wonders if he will even survive it. The truth will soon be set loose.

I really enjoyed this book.

You'll like this book if you like Eragon, Godling chronicles, and other Dragon / Elves stories. Great read. Can't wait to finish the series.

Loving this series!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! I've found that listening to the story has helped the characters come alive like they are in the room with me. Much better than my own voice in my head.

What did you like best about this story?

Beckah chosen by the king drake and the relationship that builds between her and Jaevid.

Have you listened to any of Jesse Einstein’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. The first book of this series was done by Jesse. He reads well and gives a great voice to the characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, I loved the growth spurt of Jaevid and how he is viewed differently. He had struggled with prejudice's and now folks feared him. My heart broke for him. Although, of course several folks treated him no different, but maybe were hesitant still in the beginning. Wow. What a twist.

Any additional comments?

This is a must buy and listen!!! Trust me!

like this story

I really like listening to this story with my daughter, we're waiting on the chance to get the next on series. The only thing that makes it less than perfect is the narration. Sometimes the emphasis and inflection are weird, and the voices that the narrator puts on are strange. I think a deeper voice would be appropriate for some characters but he almost always makes them higher pitched, even for the men. Other than that the writing is good and of I were reading a hard copy I wouldn't put it down until I had to.

YA audience target.

Narrator reading feels forced and I have to think it's due to the writing style he has to narrate. The sentences feel over simplified and not always natural for a person speaking the lines out loud.

Scene descriptions are lacking. Weird plot holes. Biggest one for me was the main character observes a dragon rider visiting his house to order a saddle from his father. All observers were super excited to see a dragon rider and nobody has seen an actual dragon. Later, when the main character comes back to his same house, with an actual dragon that he had to have flown over the town, not a single person observed this event? No mention of cover of darkness flying in etc so don't know what time it was. Just he lands at his house. Then proceeds to hide his dragon in the workshop of his small house.

Just weird things like that.

Overall, story has potential and I purchased others in the series.
