Publisher's summary

A knock on the door in the middle of the night sets off a dangerous and deadly pursuit in this riveting stand-alone entry in the Cain City series.

Ephraim Rivers, a struggling single father on the brink of losing his factory job, is working the graveyard shift when a man with a bullet in his gut stumbles in, whispering of stolen money. Ephraim sees an opportunity to alter the course of his family’s fortunes, and becomes obsessed with finding the loot.

But there are bad men pursuing the treasure - and for them, the opportunity is to seize power and to settle scores. Killing means nothing to them, whether it’s each other - or anyone who gets in their way.

Ephraim just wants to do right - by his son, whose medical bills are piling up; by his father, whose time on this Earth may not be long. But it’s a fine line between desire and greed - and crossing that line could be Ephraim’s final act.

Another entertaining story of Cain City.

As a loyal fan of the first two books, I was surprised and pleased with this stand alone book. First off the writing is detailed and nuanced so you feel you can see the characters and the settings. The plot is feasible and moves along on its own. Ari Fliako's narration is so spot on, he inhabits the characters intentions and desires. Love these books and always regret getting to the end of them.

Amazing

This was an incredible book and incredibly well performed. I love the depth of the characters and the respect shown to Appalachian people and culture and it’s largest problems. Fredrick really knows how to write a bad guy!!!

I am captivated.

I loved every single second of this book. It was hilarious, heart wrenching, anxiety inducing, and action packed! For anyone who wants to feel that "noir novel" nostalgia written in a modern light, pick this up!

Sooooo gooooood!

One of my favorite listens. Non-stop action, full of heart, and the story was so real. Loved, loved, every minute. It’s not for the faint of heart though, lots of gore and killing. But man, very well written and the performance was excellent.

Kept me captivated

The narrator did an awesome job with character changes. Helped ‘paint’ the scene in my mind. I really enjoyed it.

Cormac McCarthy Worthy

I loved this book. The narration is fabulous and the story line intriguing. Right away I wasn’t sure if I would like it but I did. Jonathan Fredrick writes like a gentler Cormac McCarthy and Bad Men Will Come felt like West Virginia’s version of No Country For Old Men. Simply outstanding.
