About this listen

The only thing that sucks worse than being attacked by a vampire is turning into one.

Nadine Levitt expected her 28th year of life to include wedding cake and a work promotion, not a three-day stint as a bloodsucker’s all-you-can-eat buffet. She escapes her captor’s swampy lair alive, but not quite human.

Turns out, turning into a vampire isn’t an overnight thing. More like a year-long marathon of misery - insomnia, teething, and weird urges. A whole year of struggling, and failing, to come to terms with losing her humanity. To reconcile her goodness with the monster she’ll become. And the only one who can guide her through it isn’t a person at all, but the stupidly attractive, reclusive vamp responsible for her condition.

Nadine can’t change her fate, but she won’t go quietly either. With her clock running out, a deathwish, and an unexpected companion, she’s determined to make the most of the time she has left.

One year of humanity. An impossible choice: murderous immortality or a noble death. Which will she choose?

Becoming Vampire: Diary of an Alligator Queen is a standalone vampire novel with strong romantic elements and mature themes including violence. It’s intended for a mature audience.

A surprisingly Complex Story

28-year-old Nadine Levitt is attacked and bitten by a vampire. What follows for Nadine is a year-long process of losing her humanity while becoming a vampire. Something no one in their right mind believes in. The process is both interesting and miserable. At some point, Nadine will have to choose to allow the process to finish or end what's left of her life before it's too late. "Becoming Vampire" is a much more complex story than what one may initially think from the description. Personally, I enjoyed it and I think you will too. I will also give the author, Winter Reid more consideration when picking future books to read/listen to.

Unique!

A unique and interesting take on vampire lore. Sometimes funny and self-deprecating, sometimes gross and disturbing. But well worth the listen!

PRETTY GOOD, BUT LACKING SOMETHING

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Another new take on Vampirism. Nadine is attacked by a crazed vampire who’s been trying to starve to death for 100 years or more. It’s savage but in the end, she lives. Over the next year she transforms, ironically with the help of the very Vampire who bit her.

The book plays on the morality of allowing life knowing it will kill, or killing to spare others.

It’s told from Nadine’s point of view and I didn’t get to know the Vampire very well. Other than her mentioning how handsome he is, I can’t even form a visual. But he is protective and devoted. Some hot scenes in there, too.

Great narration by Caroline McLaughlin.

👏🏻 Applauding Attempt!!

Interesting

This was a very different vampire romance. The narrator did a great job. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

liked the heroine, hero was a blank slate

I liked Nadine's character and the plot of this story, including the circumstances in which Nadine and her vampire meet. On the other hand, there were a few things about the book that I didn't enjoy as much. First, I didn't feel like a strong enough connection was made to the book sub-title of 'Alligator Queen'. As far as I could tell, she got this title as a nickname from a doctor because it rhymes with her name and she was attacked by an alligator. I don't recall that she personally defeated any, or that she has any sort of supernatural power over them. So that was a distraction. If this is a series, perhaps we'll be enlightened in future installments. Second, and this was the main reason why I gave the story 3 stars (and not more), is because the vampire was essentially a blank slate. He has no personality, no memory, no name (for much of the book, until Nadine gives him one). His first interactions with Nadine involve savagery rather than seduction. Sometimes it sounds like he's a baby duck that's imprinted on her, rather than a hero who is attracted or enchanted by her. He was a wee bit bland, in my opinion.

The narration was good, no real complaints - the narrator's lilting accent works well in this setting.
