About this listen
From New York Times bestselling author Allison Winn Scotch comes an honest, touching, and funny exploration of falling in and out of love, told from two perspectives - one rewinding history, one moving it forward - and each with bias and regret.
When their paths first cross, Ben Livingston is a fledgling screenwriter on the brink of success; Tatum Connelly is a struggling actress tending bar in a New York City dive. They fall in love, they marry, they become parents, and they think only of the future. But as the years go by, Tatum's stardom rises while Ben's fades. In a marriage that bears the fallout of ambition and fame, Ben and Tatum are at a crossroads. Now all they can do is think back...
A life of passion, joy, tragedy, and loss - once shared - becomes one as shifting and unpredictable as a memory. As the pieces of their past come together, as they explore the ways love can bend and break, Ben and Tatum come to see how it all went wrong - and wonder what they can do now to make it all right.

No matter what the world throws her way, at least Ruthie Beamish has the house. Lovingly renovated, located by the sea in a quiet Long Island village, the house is her nest egg - the retirement account shared with her ex-husband, Mike, and the college fund for their teenage daughter, Jem. The catch? To afford the house, Ruthie must let it go during the best part of the year. It's Memorial Day weekend, and Ruthie has packed up their belongings for what Jem calls "the summer bummer": the family's annual exodus to make way for renters.

In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips": he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why.

Potentially Problematic (spoilers)
I loved how the story was told in the 2 different time lines. I also loved that the story dealt with real world issues; love, loss, drugs, family, careers. However I did not like the fact that Tatum tries to justify Ben’s infidelity and blame herself. (She’s been working long hours. She has secrets too. Etc) That is not what writers should convey to readers as ‘normal’. Furthermore, in the end, she forgave him. In my opinion, no matter how much you ‘deserve to be cheated on’, cheating is the utmost form of betrayal.

Never Felt Invested
I don't know whether I stopped caring about the characters or if I never connected to them. There were sporadic moments where I cared about the characters but those weren't enough for me to feel invested in this story. The ending was predictable and I wish there was more substance to it. I didn't hate the book, I wouldn't tell anyone to avoid reading it, but I wouldn't recommend it

Decent
I didn't love the male narrator on this. His voice seemed a little cheesy, like he was ACTING. Oddly enough, I preferred him when he was reading female parts, which I usually hate. Go figure. But when he was reading Ben, I wasn't feeling it. The female narrator was fine.
I felt like the weird timeline thing (her story moves forward in time while his moves backward) was clever but kind of hard to follow in an audio book. I feel like that might be easier when reading.
Otherwise, I generally liked the story. I'm a sucker for celebrity stuff, so I felt like this gave me a bit of a behind the scenes view of what that life might be like. I was interested to put the pieces of the puzzle of their relationship together. Of course you knew how it would end, but I was interested to see how they got there. In the last few chapters, I did feel like there a few too many missed opportunities and a few too many times where I just wanted them to stop dithering already and say what they wanted to say to each other and get on with it and that sort of grated on me. But these are all nitpicky complaints. Overall, this was a solid read and I enjoyed it.

a little slow at times
the book was a little slow at times but I did appreciate the story. As someone who's been in a long-term marriage myself I thought it was an accurate depiction of miscommunication and failures despite the best of intentions.

Good story
Interesting listen but a bit dizzinging with not only Tatum and Bens voices alternating per chapter but every chapter was from a different yea. Not a complicated story so not hard to follow but if jumping around drives you crazy, this is not for you.

Ok
I did give 5 stars because it wasn’t really bad, just not the best I’ve read. I didn’t care for the male narrator because he sounded too much like Kelsey Grammar, which I know he can’t help.

Do you think I could have been MORE confused?
I once asked an author if he could critique my short story and of course he was nice enough to do so. The biggest thing he said was, “try not use date every chapter..it takes away from the story all together.”
Good advice..I only wish this author had figured if one chapter is dated 2001 then the next is 2013, don’t fault the reader if they’re not confused!! This book was all over the place..and because of that I was BEYOND confused..not my type of book..sorry
The narration was pretty good, so I’m not faulting them whatsoever. Out of 5 stars..sorry 2 for overall is sufficient..
