About this listen

In a stifling jail cell in a hardscrabble Georgia town, Detective Lena Adams sits in stubborn silence: bruised, angry, and the only suspect in a horrific murder that left a woman incinerated beyond recognition. One hundred miles away, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver has gotten the call that his young detective has been arrested. Jeffrey's wife, pediatrician and medical examiner Sara Linton, has little patience for Lena or her dramas. Fighting a heartbreaking malpractice suit, struggling to pick up the pieces of a shattered career, the last thing Sara needs is to see Jeffrey playing Lena's knight in shining armor. Sara cannot guess that within days she herself will be at the center of a bizarre and murderous case.

Lena has fled back to the place where she grew up hard, careening back through the shadows of her past and into a shocking underground world of bigotry and rage. The man who raised her is slowly killing himself with drugs. The man who beguiled - and beat - her is reaching out from prison. And now only Jeffrey and Sara can free Lena from the web of lies, betrayal, and brutality that has trapped her - as this powerhouse of a novel races toward its shattering climax...and a final, unforgettable twist.

Especially after Kathleen Early. I'm only on the first chapter but I'm not sure if I can bear listening to Joyce Bean for 12 hours.

TERRIBLE NARRATION

I had read the reviews and I thought people were just being a little harsh about the deeper register of the reader. This was a little distracting at the beginning and at times throughout the recording as it got so deep sometimes it was hard to hear. The reader also used a lower tone for Lena which made it confusing sometimes as who was talking. However, the worse part was the quality of the recording. It was of such poor quality it only made all the above mentioned problems worse.

The story was great though. I hadn't read this series until the Will Trent book with Grant County. I have always wondered about Jeffery and now I know.

Audio Recording Not the Best

I'm obsessed with this series and love this book (I cried at the end, so sad!). But the narrator sounded robotic and ruined some of the characters. It's definitely a shame.

GREAT STORY! Couldn't stand the narrator...

Would you listen to Beyond Reach again? Why?

Probably not, while the story was ok - the reader just wrecked it for me. The first 4 books were read by Kathleen Early, I liked her and was used to her - the change for each of the books wasn't good for me. Joyce Bean was really off for the characters since I have read all the earlier books.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not really, the story was good but not edge of my seat. Since I've read the Will Trent series first I knew that Sara's husband was going to be killed before the end of this book.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Her male voice were just weird to me and again, Kathleen Early brought something to the characters that I liked and she was easy to listen to. I don't mind Joyce Bean, she just wasn't good in this book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end when Jeffrey was killed.

Well..... (warning-spoiler if you haven't read)

I just can’t believe the ending!!!! I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with such an ending.

OMg!!!!

I like Karin Slaughter's work and I like this series but I am having the hardest time getting through this. I don't like the narrator at all. The production quality is also poor in comparison to the other people. Kathleen Early (former narrator of this series) - bring her back!

Painful

I have listened to all of Karin Slaughter's books now. This was the last one I had to get through in order to know the full picture of her tails. The story overall was a good story. However, this narrator was really bad. Every voice she tried to portray sounded like an old lady that had been smoking for 60 years, including the men. If you can read this one, instead of listen to it, you will like it a lot more.

Story good if you can get past horrible narrator

1 hour in and I’m surprised I made it that far…Listening to this narrator makes me cringe! Why, oh WHY did Karen decide to switch narrators in the middle of the series?! Kathleen Early was so perfect.

I Just Can’t! I’ll just read the book

I’m so hooked on Karin Slaughter’s writings I can’t wait for next one as soon as I finish one. However, the narrator on this one really detracted from the story line. The men especially sounded so old and all characters spoke with a very heavy twang, something that was not there in the first 5 books of this series. I really considered not finishing it. Bring Kathleen Early back!!!

Great story terrible narrator
