Publisher's summary

Martin Reed is thoroughly average in every way. So how has he wound up with such a pathetic existence? Martin has no friends, no lovers, and no respect. Working as a senior accountant at Southern Toilet Supply and still living with his nagging mother, his sole source of excitement is the crime novels he cherishes.

So immersed is Martin in these escapes that he fails to notice the crimes going on all around him. When first one, then another, of his co-workers is brutally murdered, Martin is shocked to become the fetching female investigator's prime suspect. Center stage at last, Martin basks not in the glow of the spotlight, but in the harsh glare of interrogation.

Critic reviews

"Slaughter sketches larger-than-life characters using only a few ordinary, hilarious, and revealing details, and narrator Wayne Knight...gives each an energetic, gloomy, or appropriately over-the-top personality." ( AudioFile)

Wayne brought Martin to life!

The story was intriguing and humorous, but it was Wayne's narration that really brought Martin to life. In the end, with all of his flaws, I liked Martin and even understood his mothers flawed logic.

Gentle character finds peace.

I enjoy the Karin Slaughter series.

This is totally different!

The story unfolds and the background information is released slowly leading to the conclusion. The culprit is easily identifiable, but the conclusion is a bit of a twist. It leaves me with a satisfied feeling at the conclusion of a murder mystery instead of the depravity of some stories. One hopes that the perpetrator gets justice sometime in the future.

Wayne Knight does an outstanding job of narrating. Each character's voice and personality are reccognizable.

Short story

For a short story its a humorous tale. Slaughter, known for her crime novels, is exceptionally funny. Keep in mind I am biased as shes one of, if not the, best author in my opinion.
Wayne Knight as narrator... Have you ever seen a dog so ugly its cute or a joke that's so cheesy it makes you double up laughing? Knight, bless his heart, is so awful it makes the story funnier sometimes. The voices aren't consistent at times. I don't think I could listen to him do a full length novel. He tries too hard. Loved him in Seinfeld!!!
This is definitely worth the money. I literally laughed out loud a few times.
Slaughter for Prez. '16

Amusing

I found Martin very amusing, never suspected that someone else was doing the killing, just thought he was having some kind of blackout spells, until he finally admitted going to the massage pallor and then I realized something else was going on but still didn't know who until almost the end. And his mother, lord what a trip, she was the funniest character in the book. Enjoyed it.

Whole novel

This would have been terrific as a novel; it is really good as a novella. Wayne Knight was great too.I have to say I pictured him as Martin, AND I could even see him playing all the lead parts--making for quite a fun video inside my head as the story unfolded.
I gave it less than five stars due to the conclusion. It was not expected but I was completely unsatisfied--my personal opinion. Others might think it was appropriate. Not terribly believable, but then again, not many options to wrap up the story at this length. Just fun to listen to and leaves you wanting more. Lovably quirky.

The most engaging narrator!

Corky story… not like anything Karin Slaughter wrote. And I think I read them all. It was engaging, with a twist. I wish it were longer .

Martin misunderstood hilarious!

This is SO different from all of the novels by Karin Slaughter, but it showcases her truly multidimensional talent. This story is delightful! Truly a laugh out loud story with a masterful performance by Seinfeld star Wayne Knight (Newman!)

Funny, loveable main characters. Ending a surpris

I loved it . . . the whole story. Humor suspense and sex crudeness, The hero has to win . . doesn't he. Sniffles and laugh out loud fun to last page. Narratíon elicit just the right kind of emotion

Hahahahaha!

I read this after reading ALL Karin Slaughter books. this was so so funny and dark and awkward and very different. Slaughter hinted at this skill with Faith and the last victim in Silent Wife. I wanted to see more of that (it balances out some of the horror in other parts).
Don't expect this to be anything like the Grant County, Will Trent, or other thriller stands alones... but it was amazing.

Too Quirky?

Super gross. Gross people, activities and voices. Saving grace was that it was short.
After this big update and they still insist lots of words, when a few would suffice.
