About this listen

From the hallucinatory noir novella Go Deep to the twisted short stories "Necessary Women" and "Remmy Rothstein Toes the Line", this collection showcases the New York Times best-selling author's dark humor, limitless imagination, and masterly command of voice and character.

Go Deep

Growing up dirt poor, Charlie Lam worked his ass off to make something of himself, no thanks to his deadbeat father or his long-suffering mother. And now a lot of people depend on Charlie: by his last count, 68 employees at his Atlanta auto dealership, 11 shiftless brothers and sisters, an ungrateful wife, a spoiled daughter, and a shameless girlfriend. Who could really blame him for wanting a little extra?

The arrangement is simple: Charlie picks up a suit from the dry cleaner's. In the suit pocket is the name of a very important man. The next day that man walks into the dealership and drives out in a new car, and Charlie gets a fat envelope full of cash.

"Necessary Women"

In a border town between Georgia and Alabama, in a three-room house made of cement block, a 14-year-old girl watches her mother die. Her father is a long-haul trucker, away for weeks, sometimes months, at a time. Her mother, with two menial jobs cleaning restrooms and working nights at the laundry, had been just 30.

A week before she died, noticing her daughter getting attention from a boy, the girl's mother warned her not to make the same mistakes she had.

"Remmy Rothstein Toes the Line"

As an intrepid adjudicator of world records, Mindy Patel has met lots of strange people in lots of strange places. But they're no match for the swampers of the Georgia bayou. Mindy has braved the oppressive August heat in search of Remmy Rothstein, who they call the "Cajun Jew."

Loved the stories and glad I had the audio for the last story. I was so taken by the character, Mindy, the World Record Ajudicator and her telling of the story about the Cajun Jew. Cannot be missed without the audio. Just hilarious. If you cannot find the humor in it you have NO sense of humor.

The first story completely threw me! And I absolutely loved it. Felt it. Laughed at it. The second shocked me...but in a sad way. And the third ... I have no words. lol So good!

Don't know why it had bad reviews, I thought it was quirky and funny at times . A little off the beaten path for Ms. Slaughter, but hey everyone has to try something different every once in a while. Kathleen Early was a great narrator as always, she is one of my favorites. Give it a try, I thought it was great. Hope she does More.

I like what she did with the first story. The last story was different from her typical writing, but amusing nonetheless.

three fun stories

The first two short stories were great. The last was hilarious. Definitely different from Karen Slaughter’s norm, but it cracked me up. As always, Kathleen Early is a fabulous narrator.

Great Listen

I was expecting something similar to the Will Trent series but was pleasantly surprised to find extra doses of Slaughter humor with some Vonnegut - like twists. I’d love to find more like these! Perhaps too raw for some but I loved these stories.

Slaughter humor at her best

First 2 stories are great, last one is unbearable… I usually love anything written by Karen Slaughter but the third story in this book was just so stupid, boring, pointless and monotonous. I couldn’t even finish that one.

The first and second stories were just as wonderful, interesting and reliable as every other Karen Slaughter book I have ever read/listened to. However, they are short stories and the second one was super short, leaving the last (awful) story to take up about an hour and 15 minutes. I so wish the time was taken up by the second story instead of the crappy one. Although, I do not have any complaints about the second story, I get it, it’s fine the way it is, I am just talking about the value to dollars aspect, and from that POV, I got half a book.
