Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.

Story
In Saving Normal, Allen Frances, one of the world's most influential psychiatrists, warns that mislabeling everyday problems as mental illness has shocking implications for individuals and society: Stigmatizing a healthy person as mentally ill leads to unnecessary, harmful medications, the narrowing of horizons, misallocation of medical resources, and draining of the budgets of families and the nation.

Exceptionally well written, researched .
This book is exceptionally well written, researched and presented. I was as a student at first skeptical of the contents.Everything started panning out down to case studies and comments at the end from the author. This is the future of treatment in Addiction as well psychology and other disciplines.

Very Informative
I found this book to be very informative. Excellent information for doctors and treatment centers dealing with detoxification and substance abuse to gain an understanding of why people self medicate. It would also be a benefit for primary care physicians to gain an understanding of substance abuse and drug detoxification.
