Publisher's summary

A skeleton is found in a shallow grave in the churchyard. But this was not an official burial.

The victim was murdered decades ago. At the same time, Detective Nikki Galena and her team are investigating the brutal slaying of local businesswoman Madeline Prospero. She was a member of an exclusive and secretive drinking club called The Briar Patch. But they've got no suspects and no one is telling them the truth.

Meanwhile, the buried skeleton leads them on a trail to the village of Quintin Eaudyke. This is a troubled place. In the late 70s and 80s a reign of terror and abuse was unleashed on the close-knit population. When more women from The Briar Patch come under threat, Nikki faces a race against time to stop more murders.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you in suspense until its heart-stopping conclusion.

Great combination of author & narrator

Much like the work of Peter Grainger & Timothy Hallinan, I jump at the next book Joy Ellis writes. As with the rest of the books in this series, Ms Ellis does an excellent job of building characters I care about. Henrietta Meier does a fabulous job and distinctly narrates each character without “blending” vocal traits, a genuine feat and something many narrators don’t manage as well. I’m glad the producers have continued to work with Ms Meier with the works of Joy Ellis. Now if only Audible will get the rest of Ms Ellis’s works....

Excellent & creepy

Good book. Great narrator. Scary enough to avoid reading at night. Enjoyed the characters. Finished it in 2 days.

Narration

The narration is so bad some characters sound like cartoon characters. Hard to listen to.

LOVE THIS SERIES! Thanks Kindle Unlimited!

I continue to love this series, although Buried on the Fens is probably my least favorite. But still a great listen and intriguing mystery! I love that the series is available through Kindle Unlimited, and adding the audio is minimal...yay Kindle Unlimited!

This was not my favorite book by Joy Ellis

Even after seven books about Nikki I prefer the series about Jackman and Evans. I found the books by Joy Ellis for free on Audible they are also free if you have Kindle unlimited.

If I didn't have Kindle I would probably have given up on this book! There are so many people to keep track of in this story!
The parents and their children and who is related to whom!?
Who is lying about who they are?

Something horrible happened years ago in a small village. Some of the children had probably been abused but none is saying anything. Many pets disappear. A dead body brings Nikki to this village. Neither parents nor their now adult children want to talk to her.

This book was confusing! A lot of people have secrets and are not who they pretend to be.

Exciting Read/Difficult Subject

The action and characters were involved and well developed, though I thought the epilogue could have offered more info. A narration by the killer offered the reason behind the twisted persona, but the book ended without the police understanding. It was a difficult unpleasant subject — mentally ill adults grown from children traumatized by apparent physical and/or sexual abuse years past, one a killer. I didn’t like the Galena character much at first, compared to Jackman, but she has developed well during the series. I appreciate they are free as I consume about two a month. Again, the books are interesting, and the characters and action well developed.

Please read a bio of this author before you make homophobic comments

Seriously, some of the recent commenters might read a bio of Joy Ellis to further their knowledge. This book tackled difficult topics of abuse in a respectful manner. And the anti-LGBTQ remarks are not helpful. Great book, great narration, great series.

My favorite of the series so far!

This is a great series! Narratored well and the stories are clean and not too much detail about any violent acts. just enough info to use imagination if needed. This could be my favorite one so far, have many more to listen to in the series but this one was awesome. I definitely recommend this series!!

Can never figure it out until the very end.

Loved the characters and the readers. Joy Ellis is now my favorite author. Books are suspenseful but not gory.
