About this listen

A man, an axe, and a dog named Fuzzy.... Let the adventure begin!

Trapped in a job he hated and up to his neck in debt, Guy Grieve’s life was going nowhere. But with a stroke of luck, his dream of escaping it all to live in remote Alaska suddenly came true. Miles from the nearest human being and armed with only the most basic equipment, Guy built a log cabin from scratch and began carving a life for himself through fishing, hunting, and diligently avoiding bears.

Packed with adventure, humor, and insight, this is the gripping story of an ordinary man learning the ways of the wild.

Editorial reviews

If you've ever felt frustrated with modern life, if you've longed, in some strange primal way, to reconnect with nature in its cruelest and deadliest incarnation, then Guy Grieve's Call of the American Wild will resonate and fascinate.

Performed with aplomb by actor Steve West, whose frank and almost conversational style suits this intimate work well, Call of the American Wild tells the story of Guy Grieve's one year retreat into the Alaskan wilderness, where he builds a cabin, learns to live off the land, and contemplates questions of self-reliance, humility, family, and modernity. This audiobook contains a wonderful mix of practical information and existential consideration, perfect for adventure seekers and memoir addicts alike.

Guy like me goes to Alaska

Would you listen to Call of the American Wild again? Why?

If I was on a long car trip and didn't have any unread books on my phone I would listen to it again because it was a good story and I'd like to pay closer attention to the logistics now that I know what to focus on, just to get a deeper understanding.

What about Steve West’s performance did you like?

AMAZING job of creating different characters.

Any additional comments?

First, the guy (literally, GUY) is Scottish, so that's why the jarring accent. I took me a little while to catch on so at first I was annoyed with the absurdly out-of-place accent. But then it made sense.

I, too, am floundering in a corporate "cube farm" and long to make a go of it in Alaska, so I understand his motives. However, I agree with other reviewers who had a hard time with him leaving his wife and little kids to go on what could have easily been a deadly adventure. As a dad, I don't have the right intentionally put myself in such harm's way for no really good reason, and I felt the same about him.

But that aside, the story was great and he did a wonderful job of describing how he muddled through as an ill-equipped stranger in a strange land.

Yes, I'm glad I read it and I would recommend it.

Great Chronicle

Loved it!! An amazing chronicle. I would recommend it to anyone. The strength and fortitude Illustrated Alaskan natives illustrate the strength that lies within Humanity.

Now what?

This book had only one negative aspect. The fact it ended. What an amazing book! I wondered how this book was going to weave its path and I was pleasantly surprised. The writing put you in the Alaskan wild. At times in the book you could smell, see, and even taste what was going as the descriptions were so in depth. Lots of laughs and struggles as well. Well done!!! I highly recommend!

Chillll out ye fact sniffers

Hey I really enjoyed this audiobook! Just finished it for second time while moving between jobsites— my office is outdoors and can really appreciate the challenge of “weathering the weather”— never been to the great far north, but felt like I got to visit it through this wonderfully narrated adventure—as far the degree of truth- can’t verify it, won’t contest it, and would prefer to not overthink it- fine story regardless—relax, enjoy the journey, let your inner woodsman share the sled— isn’t a well fed imagination more fun than a starved critique? Now pass me another bowl of that beaver stew and put a little more whiskey in this old tin cup👍👍

Great Book

Epic adventure and very well told, touched every emotion. Inspiring decision Guy, he is one man who acted on his calling and for that is an inspiration to all of us cubical dwellers. Alaska!

I loved everything about this experience...

What did you love best about Call of the American Wild?

I loved the story, the characters, the narrator...it all fell together perfectly for me.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the concept of it, but the telling was sublime. Although the subject was very serious, it was written (and read) with much humor, nuance, substance, passion and just the right amount of insight.

Which character – as performed by Steve West – was your favorite?

FUZZY! What a great character. I loved Guy, too, and of course Don, but Fuzzy won my heart with his relentless loyalty and simple companionship.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I listened to the Epilogue three times, to make sure I was catching all that Guy intended the reader to get. This story will stay with me for a long time.

Any additional comments?

I'm really glad I didn't read some of the vicious reviews of this book, and instead trusted my instincts (Guy refers to this many times in fact...trusting and LISTENING to your instincts). I will very likely listen to this whole thing again and again. I loved it.

Alaska!!

I’ve never been so I really have no business reviewing. But I know people and I know animals. I’ve know death, joy, perseverance, made mistakes, had a few wins. So like all of us and this story is all that and more with the backdrop of Alaskas and it’s harshness and beauty

Inspirational and Compelling

This book is wonderfully written and immerses you into each character effortlessly. Personally, playing this audio in my work truck every day for the last two weeks has given me a reprieve from daily monotony and simultaneously taken me somewhere I have always desperately wanted to go.

This book will be more than worth your time.
