About this listen

Gideon Waverley, heir to the Duke of Townsend, had everything a young man could need, a promising future, a title, charming good looks, great friends, and a family who adored him. Until his body turned him into a monster. He had no choice but to separate himself from the world, to hide his monstrous self from society, to cast away his future. But the brilliant and beautiful Eve Cornwell refused to believe he could not be saved, even as she refused to guard her heart. And all the while she knew she couldn't keep him once she'd loved him back into the light.

Great story!

It was a little predictable but it was still interesting waiting for the heroine figured out the problem. Gideon and Eve were lovely together. There was sadness in the story that tears at your heart but it all works out in the end.

Heart Pounding Regency Mystery & Romance

If you enjoy reading or listening to Regency romance with a mystery to solve, Cast in Shadows is for you! Author Laura Landon took me on an emotional roller coaster where I couldn’t stop listening to it. I even took a 1 ½ lunch just to finish it after arriving to work one day. The story was refreshing and, despite figuring out who the villain was about half-way through the book, I was on the edge of my seat because I became so enthralled in the characters. I couldn’t help but feel empathy for Gideon, who seemed on all accounts normal, noble, and honorable, while at the same time he suffered from seizures that became debilitating and he became dangerous at the same time.

Ten years after being locked away from society, Gideon meets Eve who is his doctor’s daughter after she returns from school. She becomes his nurse trying to figure out what triggers his seizures. After spending so much time together it becomes provident that they fall in love with each other. One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is that Gideon’s and Eve’s love story evolves slowly and naturally; and most importantly, there is no gratuitous sex. In fact, there is only one “behind closed doors” sex scene near the end of the book – just like I enjoy listening to.

As an added bonus, the irrefutably talented Rosalyn Landor narrates Cast in Shadows and her narration is simply sublime. In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook and recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romance with more substance and emotional punch.

A tad ponderous

I got through it. I have never figured out how 7/8 of the book is spent on the intro and 1/8th on dealing with the bad guy. The bad guy is is the main character. I want to know what's going on inside the mind of the bad guy and what the bad guy feels when dreaming up his nefarious and other dirty deeds. Why make me my go through all this drama just to have the story end like a Korean soap opera?

Good mystery!

Enjoyed the complex plot and characters. Could not put it down and I think the end was appropriate for the 19th century.

Enjoyable But Very Predicable

I enjoyed this story. The book is predictable. I had it figured out in the first part of the book. The author repeats many things in the book a few times.
Though the plot is clever, the key characters are frustratingly obtuse. What was glaringly obvious to me after just a chapter or two, took them most of the book to determine. Yes, I understand that the book would have been a novella if the characters had been more clever, but perhaps the author shouldn't have made the villain so obvious. The fingers of motive and opportunity pointed at the most likely person from the very beginning. While others may have motive OR opportunity, no other had both. I think the story line had great possibilities and the characters were well developed and engaging. Why the author felt that three perfectly intelligent characters had to be portrayed as idiots in this one aspect is beyond my understanding.

Rosalyn Landor made the story come to life with her outstanding delivery of the story

Cast in Shadows

The story had a lot of potential but unfortunately, I found myself rolling my eyes and getting frustrated throughout. I feel like there was a lot of repetition of feelings, physical description of people and things/places. About 10 chapters could have easily been eliminated without taking away from the overall story. Eve and Gideon did not have strong characters as I would have expected. Also, I think for the time period Eve seems to have too much freedom (i-e her father deferred to her in a lot of things and also in her dealings with Gideon). Not sure I will read this author again.

Loved it

Great story and touching romance. My only complaint is there is some extraneous chatter at the most irritating times. Right before huge discoveries you get a paragraph or two of thoughts about the hugeness of what is going to happen. You want to scream *get on with it*. Fortunately this isn't that often. The story is richly written and so heartfelt. You feel Gideon's pain and Eve's determination to find a cure. Eve's father is the best...so understanding ...reminds me of my own Dad. I did know right from the git go who the villain was, but it wasn't telegraphed. I liked it. Rosalyn Landor did her usual fabulous job.
