About this listen

Devon has faced off with half-mad zombie frogmen, a demon war priestess, and a thousand-year-old curse.

But can she survive another attempt to cook dinner?

You know, sometimes it would be nice to catch a break. Devon, a professional gamer, has a settlement to grow into a city, a character she'd love to focus on leveling, and some kitchen cabinets that really need restocking.

Unfortunately, the fate of the Relic Online game world is at stake, torn asunder by battling creator AIs. Demons rise through planar rifts, rampaging across the physical realm. The ancient city of Ishildar holds power that might turn the tide. If only Devon, the brave heroine chosen as the city's champion, could finish her epic quest line to gain control of the place.

The in-game events would be challenge enough if she weren't confronted with disasters in the real world. After a horrifying mountain bike crash, Devon's friend, Tamara, needs her support. Emerson, a programmer from the gaming company, can't unravel the troubling actions of the demonic AI, Zaa, without Devon's help.

And yeah, there's the little problem of a raid force of anarchist players coming to demolish Stonehaven, the only true home Devon has ever known.

No problem, right?

LitRPG means Literary Role Playing Game. Simply put, it’s the book version of watching someone play a video game, usually one that’s set up like an MMO (massively multiplayer online) RPG. It’s a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, depending on how it comes to be that our main character ends up living inside a virtual reality. the point of LitRPG is not how we get there, but that we get to be in this virtual reality period, living life as a badass video-game character. pretty good, I'll keep reading

this series is pretty enjoyable, but kind of basic. the story is pretty solid, though the end of this one was a bit anti-climactic. the magic system is not inventive, the skill tree isn't either. the town building is the same. I just wish there was more to like. even still, I'm going to keep reading in hopes that it gets better.

Really nicely done!

Great story, great writer, great narration. The weird little sound effects that showed up very infrequently was... weird. But the rest was great.

Being the third book in the series, I feel this way about the other two as well, so this series is definitely worth picking up. Annie Ellicott's narration is wonderful, and Jeff Hays in small quantities helps add some nice variety. Carrie Summers' storytelling is truly engaging, and there's little bits and pieces that I really appreciated - it's weirdly uncommon to see LitRPG authors expressing a grasp of the more technical things they attempt to touch upon, so something as insignificant as mentioning commits to a repository and checking out files made the world feel more genuine and believable. It's very clear that the author has a background in game development, and knows what they're talking about.

I also did want to mention that I really enjoyed the balance between the events happening in the real world, and those occurring in the game. As much as I love LitRPG, those that occur purely within the game feel far less satisfying. There were definitely moments where the first few words of a chapter bringing me back into Devon's reality filled me with excitement.

I will definitely be on the lookout for more of Carrie Summers' work in the future.

Good

Great voice acting. The MC is unnecessarily over wary of other players which is getting annoying .

Wonderful Story

This series is super fun and frustrating as well. The battle between Vaya and Za gets interesting, or rather Penelope vs Emerson. And is there a romance budding? Join Devon and her crew as they hunt down the next artifact and encounter non-jungle creatures!

holy shit balls!

When is book 4??!!??

right, quick review since if you enjoyed book 1+2 you should be going through this book instead of reading this...

the outside world meta plot progresses in an unexpected direction...
Devon grows the village, quests for the next relic and discovers new locations on her soon to be lands...
personal relationships grow, so does stats...
it's all in all pretty epic <3

Annie and Jeff knock it out of the park, the narration is top notch, the sound effects are on point and the combination is out of this world!

now what are you waiting for??

I like this LitRPG series

There’s nothing really groundbreaking in this series, but it’s really pretty good. The MC is female, the plot involves a huge quest, and community building, which I always enjoy.

The IRL is somewhat unique but just a twist on other LitRPGs. It is quite intriguing though. Narration is great, sound effects minimal(and maybe unnecessary), but overall it’s a great performance. A previous comment about the writing being ADHD may be a bit true, but it doesn’t detract from the books, and instead brings some realism into play. We’re not all infallible.

I absolutely loved this book and this series!

I cannot wait for the next book to come onto audible! Amazing narrators that really bring the characters to life. This one had a few songs effects too, at first I wasn't sure if I liked them, but I think overall added a good extra layer.

Great concept of world, game, and characters. I've gotten where I love so many of them. I look forward to search book, even if there ends up making 10 books in the series, I'm not sure I could get enough! Highly recommend, especially to any gamer out there!

g Gotten a lot better

The first few books felt a bit rushed but now it feels better paced and soundbooth has put more effort into it.

still awesome

I can't do anything but recommend this series. Only negative point is that I finished it and have to wait on the next one :).
A strong female lead who uses her brain and cunning in a magical world that is as fair as the real one. I hope you give it a chance.
Oh and the narration from Soundbooth Theater was a treat as always.
